    Hi There!
Has anyone got an SDHC card to read in the RNS-510?
My Oct 09 owner's manual says it supports SD cards up to 2 GB and SDHC cards up to 32GB. SD cards work fine but the 8GB Lexar SDHC card I've purchased won't read. Have tried reformatting a couple of time (in FAT32). I want to know if it the brand of card I'm using or if its something wrong with the reader.
    Cheers
    John

What software update are you running?
I suggest you have a look at Mavericks mygti.com site and look up the RNS510 updates

I am using an 8GB Kingston SDHC in my RCD510, my car delivered Jan 10. Just make sure you can read and write in a PC or Notebook or the like. Some driver updates may be needed for PCs and Notebooks. It will need to have data on it for the in car RCD510 or similar RNS510 to initialize. As mentioned there may be updates for the unit also.

        Hi Rosslm
My car was delivered 12 Jan so I guess it would be the same as your's.
I can read (and play the tracks) from my 8GB SDHC card on my laptop and desk pc but not from the RNS510. Do you know what software version you have?
        Cheers

My Dad is due to pick up his MK6 next week.

The dealer has told him (after searching his VIN number) that he has V2 or the software which has a 'known corruption' and the dealership would be reverting him back to V1 software pre delivery

He said that V3 is not quite ready but when it comes available the dealership would recall the car for the upgrade

I believe the version of the software has something to do with the size of cards it can read?

Check if you need to have the SDHC card formatted any particular way (NTFS, FAT32, FAT16, etc).

              Hi Glennb
I know that formating in NTFS doesn't work - It has to be FAT32.

I tried checking the version of my RNS510 this morning by turning the unit on (with out inserting the ignition key) and holding the setup button for 15 seconds. After about 5 seconds a Radio Setup menu appears - but I cannot get to the screen that displays the serial number and software version. Any tips?
              Cheers

I am not sure how to check the version, but I can tell you SDHC 32GB also works fine. I will try and get the software version tomorrow. Windows XP shows the file system as FAT32. I did not have to format the SDHC it worked out of the box. I am testing sound quality MP3 at 320Kbp approximately 100MB per CD and using WMA Lossless 220MB per CD, thats about 150 to 300 CDs on a chip the size of a 10 cent coin.

                  Hi Rosslm
                  Thanks for the info!
I converted my itunes library to mpeg to use in the RNS510. The bit rate itunes chose for the conversion was 160 kbps. I must say, with a good sound system and a quiet cabin, the compression is noticeable. Once I get this card problem ironed out I will go back to my original CDs and resample them directly to mpeg at a higher bitrate. I would be interested to read your conclusions on bit rate vs quality.

                    Off topic, but:

You don't necessarily need to convert them at a 'higher' bitrate. Just convert them using the recommended settings and LAME compile from Hydrogen Audio (after extracting them using a quality extraction program and from the original CDs of course).

Currently this would mean LAME v3.98.2 build from Rarewaves, and for a car (even with Dynaudio) or portable system (even with aftermarket IEMs), the -V2 option would be optimal. It 'aims for' 192kbps variable bit rate, but will range from an average of ~160 to 230 depending on the complexity of the content that you're encoding.

                    Hope that helps

Thanks Coreying for the info on Lame!

I dropped into Barloworld today to ask about why SDHC cards don't work in my car.

What I was hoping to hear
"Yes - your right, it appears your car was delivered with an old firmware version. Bring the car back next week and we will upgrade it. Should take about an hour."

                      What I actually heard
Service Rep 1 : SD card? What's an SD card?
Me: It a small memory card (shows card) that you can store and play music from.
SR1: Oh, that a bit high tech for me, I'll get Service Rep 2
                      5 minutes later...
SR2: No you can't use SDHC cards only 1GB SD cards work
Me: I know you could only use up to 2 GB SD cards in previous versions but my owner's manual says I can use up to 32 GB SDHC cards
                      SR2: Its a misprint....
Me: But I have spoken to another owner who got their car 2 days before me and they are able to play SDHC cards, in fact lots of people can. Can you tell me what the current firmware version is?
                      SR2: No
Me: Can you tell me what firmware version is is installed in my car?
                      SR2: No
Me: Can you tell me how to check my firmware version?
SR2: No - you will have to leave the car with us for a full day for us to look at it.
                      Me: Ok when?
                      SR2: 4th March
                      Me

How does one determine what version of the firmwear they have on their own?

                        VAGCOM?

or can the headunit display the version somewhere?

                          This works on mine:

Open the car, don't insert the key.

Turn the unit on and hold the setup button down till the display changes.

If you see AM/FM/DAB continue to hold it down to the next display.

Press versioninfo (on mine it's second from the top)

You can scroll up and down through the displayed details.

                            Hi Idler
I'm following your instructions but it never gets past the FM AM DAB setup screen. I've held the setup button for a full minute.

My wifes Tiguan 147 delivered late Dec 09 (MY10) doesnt support SDHC in the RNS510; I went into office works and bought a regular 2GB SD card for about $7....and it works

FYI IMHO using the SD card or even the HDD is a pain in the ass; its slow, it seems to want to constantly index tracks etc. The MDI with an ipod seems to eb a far better option, but even using that, I think its a little buggy in the sense that sometimes it seems to take a while to connect to the ipod; maybe its just out unit....
