  • Procedures for purchasing new GTI.

i have never purchased a new car before, so i need some tips on the procedures.
i have signed the papers and paid deposit, put on a new GTI.
how do i track the car? he has not given me any details of the car....what should i receive? also do we purchase the VW 3 years extended warranty when the car arrives?

your car (order) will be assigned a production week; a week that its going to be built and rattle down the factory production line. Once its built it will wait in a holding yard for a few weeks and then be loaded on a ship for its journey to Australia

    (a) your dealer will be able to give you an indication of the week its going to be built, thats usually a few days to a few weeks after your order is placed

    (b) around the time of production, once the build is locked in your dealer will give you a VIN; once you have that and its on the chip or scheduled to be loaded (its ona manifest) then you can start to track it

    cheers

The car i just ordered left Germany (Bremerhaven) on the 17th yet it was the 21st before it appeared on the tracking site.

seems to be some delay in the info getting added to their site.

SA far as 3 years extended warranty goes, you can still purchase the warranty right up until the manufacturers warranty runs out, BUT it will be cheaper now than in 3 years time, but the questions you have to ask yourself are.

a/ will you have the car for more than 3 years?
b/ can you afford to pay for the car and the warranty at the same time?

Its definitely the VIN you can track.

maybe they have a build number; i doubt it, the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is unique to every car in the world, no two are the same

As far as I know once the VIN is attached to a chasis (well, body these days I guess), thats the number they track against...

Im not a VW expert by any means but I know a little about Supply Chains & Logistics....

Tell your dealer you want the VIN

Wot they said ^. Just pester your dealer for the VIN, then you will be able to track your car yourself (once the data is entered on the shipping system)

AFAIK the VIN is allocated to a vehicle once it is scheduled to be built (which may be up to 2 weeks before the physical assembly starts).

There is also a "Commission Number" (format YYYY/123456) which might to be used to track an order before the VIN Is allocated, but the only time I've seen this number used is at VW dealers (using their nadin.au system).

I'd say that first internal number is what is being referred to as the "build number". When I bought my MINI the dealer referred to it as a production code, same thing really, just a different name.

VIN is universal and that's what you need for tracking purposes (see link below):

This is where you can have your say on anything that doesn't fit in the other sections. Remember we are a public forum and the same rules of propriety hold! No bad language, incitement of hatred or antisocial posts, please. They will be edited or deleted mercilessly!

                  Good luck.

Production for GTI I think is February, but that is not yet confirmed. It depends on the model and specification and what parts are available. Demand is at an all time high for MKVI Golf in general, which is a very positive sign for the brand and all its drivers. This would suggest positive resale values in the coming years, just like in the past.

A Volkswagen is not just another tool in the shed; it is something worth waiting for. Sit tight, enjoy the wait, and dream in anticipation.
                        thank you!
