Mk6 Golf GTI - Made in Germany?

I was having a look at the new GTI in the showroom and was told by the salesman that the models being shipped to Australia, are now manufactured in Germany. This is good news if it is true. I have a 2008, South African built GTI, which I have reservations on the build quality.

So does anyone know whether this is true?

If they were built in Adelaide, why would they take 4-6 months to deliver?

I'm pretty sure they are not built there, if they were, the Australian salesman would not have missed a chance to fly the Aussie flag

Yes, they are now made in Wolfsburg, Germany.

Get the VIN off any current model GTI and plug it into this online decoder:

Just look at the 11th character in the VIN. If it's a 'W', and chances are all Australian-delivered GTIs will be, it will be built in Germany.

Love the Adelaide remark, though. VW could ship Beetles in flat-pack form, and put them together at Mitsubishi's old Tonsley Park facility

What's wrong with the build quality of the SA built Golf? It's got no more faults than the German built one and all the work is handled by machines and most of the components are from Germany.

The search facility will show numerous threads confirming that it's made in Germany.

And you're linking component replacement to the build location despite them being assembled by robots with little hands on with parts that are 95% sourced from Germany and that arrive pre assembled.

My South African made GTI V was awesome - I don't think you could split the quality - being in China last year, even the Chinese made VW's have engines built by Germans, with German machinery - seats by Recaro, electronics by Bosch.

Even though all the plants are located outside Germany, they are strictly quality controlled.

What about all Jetta's being made in Mexico? - Have not heard to many complaints about them & they are 90% a MKV GTI

The answer your question specifically, your GTI was made in South Africa because it was a 5 door MKV. The 3 door MKV was made in Wolfsburg Germany.

As of the introduction of the MK6 model, all GTI are made in Wolfsburg Germany.

However, as Mav and Guy etc have pointed out, I'm not sure that really means a big step up in quality, other than the MK6 is just a nicer car to start with
