WHAT?!!!?? They're meant to be dealer gift's, not dealer souvenirs. That's really dodge! My sales guy better not make me pay for them!!!

I know! Pretty poor isn't it?
Got the after sales, pushy type giving me the long arse ramble about why tinting (through them) was the only way to go. Funny seeing as they don't actually do it (she was cagey as to who actually did it), but outsource it to some independant local tinting company.
If she hadn't gone on so much I may have considered it, but she went on about being 'passionate', and about how many dodgy /good jobs she'd had on her own cars. (Probably never had it done once, and if she did - bet it was never $330 for 2 windows!)
Then she told me that I could have the umbrella with the tinting at $360 odd dollars! Said she had to pay for the umbrella somehow.... (she mentioned a Passat umbrella, but thats not the one I was thinking of... isn't there meant to be just a vw one?)

Like you said - thought dealer gifts were meant to be a 'gift'.

This thread rather reminds me of haggling for cameras, clothing, transistors etc. with Singapore traders about 50 years ago.

At the end of the deal, if the trader smiled and offered you an orange drink, you knew you'd been done.

hahaha.. Well I'm not walking the 30-odd km from home to work. Also, given the hours I work, I'm not walking the 30 mins from my place to the train station, then spending 50mins on the train to get to work...

So for me, the decision was simple...

Ignnorance is bliss, a $1000 car will get you to and from work as well as a new car, or alternatively it is implied you move out near enough to work?

buying a place in near the city was an option, although given I'm only 22, I didn't really want a mortgage hanging over my head this early...

Dude buying a house 7 years ago was a lot easier, a 22 year old affording property remotley close to a city without assistance is near impossible.
