  • Yep, then you can either have the 100mm on the rear too or go with the 134mm....hmm I wonder which would look best on the rear, thoughts?

On a side note I tried every combo I could think of for the prestige (two letters, two numbers then WA) but they are all taken

So I reckon I'll have to go the customs which then leaves me with the difficult decision of what to get....and although I know it would be kinda stealing but Fab_R's plate is available in WA and I do really like that one

    • Well there are some photos I posted of me fitting Lakin plate holders on my car.

Being from NSW, the rear is 520mm x 112mm and the front is 372mm x 84mm. So neither plate matches the options you have, but that may give you an idea...

      • Well all ordered Getting the front and rear Lakin brackets (front to replace the factory one) for the slimline front and rear custom plates.

Now all I have to do is wait 6 months till my car arrives

        • I did read through the majority of this thread, but didn't come across this info.
My dealer delivery person mentioned that they (the dealership) were annoyed with the front bracket on the GTI/GTD/R cars, and have asked many times to not have them fitted.
Apparently they are fitted at compliance time by Patrick Autocare.
This would make sense as the < GTI cars all have a slight recess (I think) in the front bar for fitting a number plate, but the GTI/GTD/R does not.
I do remember years ago that the law regarding front number plates was that if there is no appropriate mounting position for a front number plate, then you didn't have to have one. This was all pre speed camera days, and I am guessing that once speed cameras were introduced, they also pushed through some law regarding new cars must have some obvious location for a front plate.

          • Whilst I do know some dealers are frustrated at the front plate holder too, it is not correct that it is fitted in Australia by Patrick Autocare.
It is fitted at the factory, and can be confirmed by looking at the "Pr-numbers" list from your Vehicle Specific Information sheet (obtainable from erWin):

            No. - Origin - Family - Description
            6W1 - L - KZV - Licence plate bracket front (large)

This comes standard on cars thorough Europe and UK, but not on cars destined to America.
I did talk to Marcus Hofmann from Volkwagen Group Australia about this in person in June last year. I followed him up with an email, and chased him up a few months later.

I had suggested that the plate holders not be installed by default, and rather delivered to the dealers (either with the cars, or in bulk) so that they can install them if the customer choses. He said that VGA were looking into this but didn't have a solution....

Knowing the the "code number" for the holder is 6W1, it makes me wonder whether your dealer can put into the NADCON car configuration page -6W1 and see whether that would get through the system to the factory (-W4B is how they'd order a 3 door for example. i.e. "delete 5 door option".)

Anyway... I tried. Pointing out that there is only 3 of the 70+ varieties of plates that fit the holder in NSW, none in ACT and a few other states, that some states the plates cost $500 to $700 to fit, I thought I made a good case... I guess it's just something that won't change until enough customers give them the same feedback.

            • I ended up going with the normal size euro plates - attached by double sided tape. I'm quite happy with the fit on the front and the back. The overhang on the front mount is negligable. I didn't even notice until I ran my fingers underneath it.

              • Stupid question. How do I order a euro personalised slimline plate for the front and a large for the back on the NSW Myplates site? Cant see an option for anything other than full size....?

Ignore me, its a default for Black Euro Icon ! Durrrr

                Thanks

                • Hey guys, just recently bought a MK6 GTI and it originally didn't come with the front numberplate holder. The dealer just drilled some holes into the bumper to fit the standard issue SA plates. I have changed over to black premium slimline plates and now there are holes exposed on the front bumper. I was going to go euro, but because of the lack of the front holder I thought that it'd look weird.

Should I just use rubber grommets to cover up the holes? It's a CSG coloured car.

                  • Question - if you want personalise EURO plates you need to get the Premium EURO ICON plates.

However the front and back plates are different sizes. The back plate is the longer plate and one I would like to put on the front of my GTI as it fills the plate holder perfectly on the GTI as most are aware.

Are you allowed by law in NSW to swap the fonrt and rear so the larger plate is at the front???

If you used any other style the back plate may be 372mm long anyhow, so is there a requirement for the EURO???

                    Thanks

                    JP

OK - sorry - found an answer - kind of!

You cannot use the smaller plate on the back in NSW... I have however sent an equiry to RTA NSW to ask if you can get two plates at 110x520 (or two rear plates in a set) so you can put the 520 long plate front and back....

This is for the Premium EURO ICON plates only, which can be personalised - otherwise it will the the standard EURO's for me!!!!!

Will post up answer when I get a response...

BTW - DreamensioN - what you have done with yours is exactly what I want to do - the QLD personalised EUROs come in the same size front and back at 520mm, perfect!!! you guys are lucky, we don't have this option in NSW... not sure about the prices though, well over $500..... looks sweet though...

                      • Bloody NSW RTA...... they will not provide two rear (520) sized plates in the EURO Premium.

So looks like EURO classic white for me..... I am now starting to really understand and appreciate why this thread was started now!!! Shame on VW.

Well - positive is - at least it costs a lot less per year to customise the EURO classic .. but you only get N-XX-XXN or N-XX-NNN options, enough for initials I guess - pity as "JP GTI" was available in the EURO premiums and i wanted them....

                        • Hey all,
Just ordered my plates. Quick question on the Lakin's.

I have got Black Euros so the smaller 372 x 84 front plates. Should I ask Philip for the same size front bracket (372x84) or go the full size front bracket (520 x 110)? Both seem available.....

Sorry if answer is in this thread...I'll call him tonight anyways..

EDIT - THink i've found the answer, the large frront bracket also hides the ugly initial OEM bracket holes so I should get that one, correct?

                          Cheers

I would say both options are incorrect!
Since Philip makes them custom, he has an option which fits the 372x84 plate, but is wide enough to still mount on the OEM holes so you don't have any ugly holes/plugs. I installed mine and took photos a while back here.

                            And one of the pictures:

You'll be surprised at how good the kit really is
