  • I know this isn't a hot topic at the moment but just wanted to mention I have ordered Lakin brackets and covers yesterday. Phil was fantastic to deal with. Even answered my e-mail at 2am, that's some crazy hours he is putting in!! Due to having 5 digit slimline plate at the front, I have ordered 4 X 8mm OE scrivets to fill the holes left after OE plate bracket is removed. I will colour code the scrivets of course.

    • Hey guys, I'm in QLD and was going to order the 3 letter, 3 number Euro Navy plates from Personalised Plates Queensland | PPQ.COM.AU (the reason for this is I'm rolling over my current 3 number, 3 letter combo to a euro style plate).

The choices I have for size (back/front) are:
      520mm x 112mm + 520mm x 112mm
      or...
      520mm x 112mm + 370mm + 100mm (slimline)

Basically, I don't care if the front is slimline or not, I just want the best fitting plate. Does anybody have experience with fitting either sized plate to the front/back of the MK6? I'm assuming all Golfs VI's are the same when fitting a plate. I can't imagine there being any difference between a Golf R vs say a TDI or whatever.

      • The full sized one (520x112) without a cover is the closest to fitting the stupid number plate holder on the front. It overhangs the bottom a fraction, but then the bottom doesn't have the "frame" around it, so it's fine.

If you were to go the slimline on the front, you'll either have it drowing in the stupid holder, or need to look at something like the Lakin Plate Holders (and covers). This is the option that I went with. You can see my photos here.

Oh, and there is definitely a differences between the standard Golf's and the GTI/GTD/R. The standard Golf's have no front plate holder, just a slight recess in the front bumper.

        • slightly off topic but any idea on how to remove the hideous front euro plate holder that the R comes with from factory?

            • Thanks again for your post Corey.

Does anybody have a photo of the standard VW plate holder on Australian delivered cars? I just went back through this thread and also some research on Google, and everyone says the VW plate holder is such a disappointment.

              • Every single photo of the GTI/GTI/R where someone hasn't take it off has it!

And yes... it's curved, so plastic covers don't fit properly (like the last photo).
And yes... on the R, it's blocking part of the air-intake infront of your radiator and intercooler. On the GTI and GTD, it sits in front of a "blocked off" portion of grill, but the R's grill is open behind the plate holder.

                • Will Euro plates mount fine without the front numberplate holder?

There's a MK6 GTI that I'm looking at which didn't come with the standard numberplate holder on the front bumper. Will a standard euro-style plate affix without any issues?

Well, does it have any holder at all? How was the existing plate attached? Are there holes in the bumper? Without any other mounting point, you'd need to drill holes and affix a Euro plate directly into the bumper. This would be very bad if you ever want to revert to a smaller plate, as said holes would likely then be exposed.

To avoid this problem with my euro plates, i just drilled the holes to affix it closer in from the corners so as to match the holes on normal state plates and just used double sided tape on the ends to hold it flat.

In SA, most of our plates come with pre-drilled holes located at the extremities.

Having said that, I can't confirm that's the case on the Euro-style plates, as I haven't looked closely.

                          • 6 months on, my "temp" double sided tape solution is still holding strong. They lift up a bit when I'm using the gerni though lol

Am almost positive Euro's are the only exception and are not pre-drilled.
