If someone has the foresight to purchase a plate of an upcoming model then good on them for trying. There will most likely be some enthusiast that will want it. After a while if there are no bites it may come down to cost price. Why cut up rough about it because you were too slow to think of it yourself?

I still like the euro plates that I saw, V WR 020. Just a pity for the owner that VW decided to drop numbers on the R model.

Try and find an RS3 combo and reserve something now I have already checked already and V RS 003 is already taken in Victoria.

well Corey, I think those dealer plates arent illegal?
I also asked about sun blinds and a price fitted, she had no idea what the hell i was asking till i gave her part numbers... She quoted me $360 for the two rear doors and $360 for the rear hatch (and stated they have never fitted any on golfs, as privacy glass was standard on most golfs sold)

Yeah I agree, but in this case there is a story behind it. Still doesn't justify an attempted fleecing of more than double the price.

Agreed. 2 grand IS ridiculous and unfair I dont give a flying fart whether the guy is a member or whether he is a centrelink scummer. I hate plate poaching. Its perfectly legal, but (and especially a forum member) taking a plate combo to sell to his fellow enthusiasts for a $1200 profit. I couldn't care less what he thinks of my opinion of him.

If you're intending to remove it shortly afterwards to install a proper plate bracket etc, then just use a square of it on each corner (as in, a length equal to the width of the tape).

For more permanent mounting I would do three vertical strips (or four for euro plates) and they won't come off easily short of bending the plate. I couldn't find the tape easily but went to a panel shop as they have it and wouldn't drill holes in a new car.

It's also good if you are going to change plate styles and you dont want holes outside the plate area on the back (ie if you went from euro to normal). You see a lot of cars where the plates have been screwed on badly or not too high/low etc and detracts from the car a bit.

That's exactly my point Mr Fox. They "mount" those dealer plates in a material bag with a clear plastic front (for the plate to be viewed) and put the handles of the bag over the rear window washer, or close the boot on the handles etc. They're not screwed in, or even taped on! They're just dangling there in a bag.

If dealers are allowed to do that (which they are), then surely they can double sided tape it.

Anyway, it's enough talk about it. If you're not willing to force the issue, or do your own homework and show the dealer that VIC Roads nor the Federal Government (via the ADR's) don't have any requirement for how a plate is mounted (as far as screws/tape/string/bags), then it's simply your problem and no one elses here.

Hey guys - Had a quick question. Have just received my new standard sized euro plates (upgrading from standard slim line plates) and was wondering what the best way to attached them on were. I've had a look at a few pictures on those Mk6 GTI's with standard size Euro plates and I can't see any screws holding them on. Is the best way just to use some 3M double sided tape or should i be screwing them in?

Sorry Corey for wasting your or anyone elses time with MY problem and I am willing to force the issue, however all i said was "DEALER WILL NOT CONFIRM, FITTING MY EURO PLATES ON DOUBLE SIDED TAPE!"...Furthermore how hopeless the staff are if they cant recognise Golf Options (window blinds) let alone relate to a LAKIN PLATES link i sent them!!

Hi Mate. If you're talking about pictures where the poster has a plate cover, then the screws are often "obsured" by the plate cover. I probably wouldn't use simply doublesided tape indefinitely, but it can be used temporarily. I'd screw them in for a permanent solution though.

Maybe a stupid question but would a dealer allow you to leave a dealership without the plates actually attached to the car?

I know it's illegal to drive on the road without plates on but what if you had them sitting on the dash as i see some drivers do, especially if it's only a short drive home. I guess you'd still be screwed if the cops stopped you.

In NSW, you can get a letter from the RTA to drive home (or to a local car business) without your places fitted to your car. The recognise that it's not always practical to fit the plates immediately as you need tools and drills etc. I'm not sure if this could be used to drive from a dealer to home though. I'm also not sure what the situation is in other states.

Yes G-rig, thats another option, i might have to go with my tools and do it on their forecourt, thats if they wont allow the two way tape option! From what i understand, if they mount the rego plates prior to delivery..for free.!!
If i supply Lakin Plates to be fitted by them prior to delivery, there is a fee ...?
