Agree, that is the first priority but reckon it would look good on nearly all colours and is very euro.

    Anyway, yeah, they're similar dimensions - 520 x 110mm
Cheers, will see how they look with the VW holder however if it stays I wont be putting a perspex cover on, whereas i may do if i mount it directly on the bumper. could look clean with no protectors.

Regular slim plates would be fine though.

      • Got my lakin plates yesterday and have installed them onto my car looks great.

        Will post some pictures soon.

That's true it doesn't leave much vertical mounting area which is why i ended up leaving it on. My plate is similar to that one and fits neatly inside the holder.

          • Got my rego papers yesterday... it lists the normal white NSW premium plates on it instead of the Euro plates

When I was placing my order I asked them to throw in Euro plates - he said they did that standard - I said great
Now it turns out he must have meant the normal white plates.
The only way I can get this changed before i take delivery is if i cancel all the paperwork (loan, insurance etc), they change the plates, then issue-sign-post all new paperwork - which will not get done by Friday

            Douche bags

I've waited long enough so I'm just going to take delivery on friday as-is. I guess I'll decide then how stupid it's going to look with a tiny plate on a massive black plate-holder.... or if like Corey suggested, I'll see if I can remove the plate holder

I can let you know ahead of time, it sure does look stupid =)...hate how the holder is WAY bigger than the plate

What style of front bracket did you get? The type that mounts to the plastic adapter (as per mine), or one that mounts directly to the bumper and replaces the adapter?

It doesn't look stupid if you get a plate that it's designed for..

Agree it looks bad with every other plate though and a bit frustrating. Id be tempted to ditch it if using a normal plate.

You could sort it out later, and get them to reimburse the costs if it states 'euro plates' in the contract. Easier to change it later and they wouldnt be ready in time anyway.

                  • When I got my car I had the same White plates.

I ordered premium (metallic) ones and you basically pay a pro-rata rate to get the new ones. they normally take about 2 weeks to deliver and all you do is transfer the white ones with the new ones and pay the annual fee for the Euro ones.

I don't think it's chaged much in the last 2 years but if you go down to the registry and tell them the situation they should help you out.

                    • I'm not going to say that they don't still do that (cause I'm eating dinner and can't be bothered looking it up right now)... but they've actually rejigged the entire NSW plates system as of sometime mid last year.... so I'd double check before presuming anything

Hey AdamD i'm still using the factory fitted plate holder and just bought a lakin cover. Since i have a euro plate it works and fits like a charm.

The other thing is, that's the ONLY plate in 56 options in NSW (including 6 euro options) that actually fits the plate holder properly. What if you wanted one of the other 55 styles? I think this situation sucks
Coreying, I have read through the thread and I cant seem to see what peoples issues are with the plate holder on the GTI? If you want your plate to fit properly why not just order a full size euro plate (im from Victoria)? Or are there issues with the full size euro plates fitting on the plate holder too?

                          • In NSW, there is only a single Euro plate style which fits. It costs $400. The other 5 europlate styles (including the black euro plates) are only small and only take up about 1/4 of the area. There are also ~51 other NSW plate styles which do not fit.

In other parts of the country, there either is no Euro, or there are expensive annual fees (I think SA is like $150 per year... so that's $1500 over 10 years, just for a plate that fits!).

In addition, the plate must be bent to meet the substantial curve of the holder. If you wanted to put a cover on it, the cover needs to be custom made to comform to that curve (like the Lakin ones), or if you just buy an off-the-shelf traditional plastic cover which can't be bent, the plates sit approximately 1cm out from the plate holder on the left and right edge and make things look even more ridiculous.

Basically, it's just a PITA. Victoria are a lucky bunch, because they have the choice of plate size for all of their Euro options, and they're not that expensive. Then again, even if I had the option of large black euro plates, I'd still prefer the smaller size.

It is my believe that the MK6 GTI, GTD and R, should not come with the plate holder fitted, and that the dealer could fit them if the customer wanted it fitted.
I'm not sure what the situation was for the MKV, some had them, some didn't, so maybe that's what they did with the MKV. Whatever the case, they're a lot nicer without them for the majority of Australian number plate installations

Thanks for that, well I have just requested the my dealer fit full size white Euro plates to my GTI that is arriving. As I said im in Victoria. So looking at the Vicroads website there are 2 styles of Euro Plates in Vic.

                              - Full Size
                              - Slim Line

Full Size seems to be the correct size to fill the plate holder. Heres hoping it works! I will post pics of my plates once I get my car!

It doesn't have to be bent that much, and mine is on there with ds tape (three vertical strips). I wouldn't use a plate protector if you're using the euro plate mount that is already on the car as it looks good like the pic i posted earlier, nice and flush.

Personally i dont like slim line europlates but if i had personalised plates a slim line would be good mounted directly on the bumper, but then you got the problem of seeing the holes where the holder was attached. You could always get the bumper re-done at a body shop.
