  • I look forward to hearing how you go Adam - please post pics when you can. I have personalised plates that I'll transfer from old car to GTI when it arrives, but my plates are quite small - 3 letters 1 number. Has anybody else used the method described to fit a smaller plate?

I was told by the dealer that Volkswagen Australia required dealerships to supply Euro style plates on new cars. Or maybe just GTIs, I can't remember specifics.

And charge you for it? Just wondering why they would?

Wish they sould remove the tacky number plate holders, but looks best without them altogether, and if you have a europlate it would cover the holes anyway.

        • I just ordered a rear bracket that has been custom made for the holes drilled into my rear bumper by the dealer.

Philip also suggest me to just get a plate cover for the front since i'm using a euro plate and it'll fit onto the holder perfectly.

I thought the factory plate holder has a fair bit of curvature in it? Wont you have to bend the plate (ie can't use a cover)?

Yeah it does have a LOT of curvature in it. You can bent a number plate so it follows the curvature, but you obviously can't bend a plastic cover. So the cars I've seen have the numberplate with the sides about 1cm out from the plate holder on the sides.

              • That's why i'm thinking of ditching the crappy plastic plate holder and then could use covers that dont require drilling, or may not even put any on.

I just emailed Philip about it and he said it should be fine. I guess we'll see how it goes when i get. I'll post some pics up when i've got it all installed and everything.

                  • Saw this pic on another forum and a euro plate doesn't look too bad at all with the stock number plate holder.
I assume tape may not hold it with the curvature though, unless you bend it first?

                    • It looks like there is a small screw in each top corner.
The other thing is, that's the ONLY plate in 56 options in NSW (including 6 euro options) that actually fits the plate holder properly. What if you wanted one of the other 55 styles? I think this situation sucks

That would be a good reason to get that style then .

Hi mate do you know what the dimensions are of that plate? I'm getting some full size QLD classic Euro which are ~520 x 112mm.

                        • But what is blue/white with black lettering didn't suit the colour of your car!?

                          Anyway, yeah, they're similar dimensions - 520 x 110mm

Yeh it seems a bit short-sighted, for sure

I must say, right now I'm feeling pretty happy about my colour choice
Also, I'd always planned to get those white Euro plates anyway
It's personal preference but the only other NSW plates I like at all are the slim line white premium plates
I'm not a big fan of the black ones... although I agree they would blend in more on a black car than the white ones (which would stand out like a sore thumb)

                            • It's a bit OT, but a pet peeve of mine is non-European cars wearing Euro plates.

Who do they think they're fooling by putting Euro plates on a Hyundai ?
