I'm thinking about getting the black NSW 'Euro Icon Premium' plates. Same size as the euro's (84x372 at the front, 110x520 at the back), but you can get them with the normal lettering config i.e. not the usual euro 'N' then 2 letters and 3 numbers (or 2 numbers and a letter).
Means I could just transfer my current plates to the new design, without having to get custom plates and paying a yearly fee. Or if I decide to get custom, they're more configurable...
I realise this doesn't help the OP with his vic plates choice but thought I'd mention them
Now.. I can't remember if the 118TSI has the black plate holders... will have to check that when I get home I guessLast edited by MaccaTSI; 14-01-2010, 10:47 AM.2009 VW Golf 118TSI | United Grey | DSG | Sports Pack + ACC | RCD510

There is no plate holder on 118TSI and slim line fits perfectly.
But "black NSW 'Euro Icon Premium' plates" combination (as You described large & small) can be used for GTI but other way arround large one at front and smaller at back.sigpic MY16 GTI 40

But I'd be curious to see if it leaves big holes in the bumper.
If not then I'd rather the slimline black NSW euro.
BTW, NSW Euro plates are now $400 once-off so if you have 'em you don't really want to give 'em up.
If you have black Euros, one option could be to order a new rear plate (to put on the front plate holder), although I prefer the look of the smaller plate.
Small plates look great on the Mark V GTI (and mine came without the plate holder).
Maybe it is possible to delete the plate holder: I have seen a number of regular Mark VI Golfs in showrooms without a plate holder and they share the GTI's bumper, no?

IN WA Yes
On 118TSI I used black Slim line front and back as at this WA Dep. of Transport website
DoT will help you get where you need to go safely, connecting you with work, family and places throughout Western Australia every day.
And some other (in WA) have even smaller personalised plates - 3/4 of Slim line
I just realised taht You ar talking about combination large & small and is it legal to put small one at back ... not sure about that.Last edited by MIRSAD; 14-01-2010, 11:35 AM.sigpic MY16 GTI 40

Euro Plate Covers
I'v ordered Vic Euro plates for my new 2010 build GTI. The site below looks to have really good plate holder and cover solutions. They are based inTassie.

Yes, it is illegal and fines apply
I have a set of slimline plates; can I put the small plate on the rear of my vehicle?
No. The small plate was designed specifically for the front of a vehicle and must be only placed on the front. Fines apply for the incorrect use of number plates.

I was driving (in WA) 118 TSI from Feb to Oct 09 with Slim line plates (small 372mm X 100mm)) purchased from department of transport from this website
DoT will help you get where you need to go safely, connecting you with work, family and places throughout Western Australia every day.
I am not sure are they same size like in East but slim line (black or white) small front and back are common and legal here in WA.
but what I can say ... we are to far from youLast edited by MIRSAD; 14-01-2010, 12:31 PM.sigpic MY16 GTI 40

In NSW the height of the 'rear slim' plates are 95, 107 or 110mm with traditional plates being or 134mm.
The corresponding 'front' plate is either the same size, or 84mm high. The Black Euro front plate discussed above is 84mm. So our slimmest plates are slimmer than WA.
But yeah, whatever the case, there are different regulations for different states, and in NSW our RTA states very clearly, it's illegal, and fines apply
