I've just spent the last few hours reading all 68 pages to this thread. There is so much useful info re what to do with that awful piece of plastic that will be on my new Passat Alltrack due in early July.
It's obvious I'll need to drive the 3 hours up the road & shake the hand of Phil from Lakin Plates. I'm going to propose how to not only utilise my current standard euro plates, but also bolt a couple of lightweight HID Lightforce spotlights...
Many thanks to all you owners & gurus of all the hot looking Golf's throughout this thread..
just get that plastic frame off asap, as it will leave scratch marks relatively early ( mine scratched the bumper lightly after maybe 4000km/6 months).
Hey lads just got new euro plates for my roc. Wondering what the best mounting option was? Ive seen the lakin setup butfeel they often get condensation occuring. Was thinking using the standard setup of the euro holder and just using ds tape for the front. Not sure what to do at the back? Maybe the lakin backing without the clear plastic ?
I've got euro plate holders with clear perspex that I had cut out at a local engineering place.
When I went to wolfsburg, I bought the original vw holders (same as what i had, just with a little vw logo) :p
I'm going to offload my unbranded (plain black) euro plate holders soon (minus the perspex of course, since I still want that).
The condensation occured with the perspex when I didn't remove the plastic (that protected the perspex), but once I did, I didn't find condensation to be an issue. They just sit between the plate and the plastic plate holder.
I should mention that both the unbranded euro plate holders I had previously and the vw plate holders I have now, use a setup where you screw the plate holder onto the car (multiple mounting points for you to choose from), and the plate sits in the holder which has a front edge all around that clips onto the backside of the plate holder, so it sandwiches the plate in between. I've never used ds tape. I like it like that.
I'm about to buy some Lakin plate holders for my new Skoda Octavia
QLD Full size euro (520 x 110) with NO SCREW/HOLEs in satin black finish.
Does anyone have those mounting plates? How does it attach the plate to the bracket? (I hope not tape!)
If you've chosen a bracket with no screw holes, then the only way to mount them will be via double-sided tape. Otherwise, you'd choose a bracket with holes intended to match the factory holes in your front bar. I suggest you contact Philip from Lakin Plates via email and discuss your requirements with him directly - he's a really friendly bloke and incredibly helpful.
I had a good chat with Phil (who is a top bloke!) and I chose the bracket with no screw holes. The "no screw holes" refers to the plate mounting, not the bracket itself. That has holes to mount the bracket to the car, and recesses for the tape to secure the plate to the bracket. So the plate is not screwed at all to the bracket, for a very slick/clean look. I'm happy with the purchase.

Hi guys im in NSW and going to receive my gti in a couple of weeks. Is it true that you can no longer purchase the 'euro classic' platres? The ones where the front plates actually fit the front if the gti?
Can't help you in regards to NSW plates, but lakin plate holders are the bomb. I have full size euro plates on lakin plate holders and not only ate they absolutely perfect fit, they use factory mounts and no screwing through bumpers etc.

I have the old style euro plates you are talking about, and thought maybe the black ones would look good. You are correct, all the nsw euro plates now appear to have a smaller width front plate (372mm or something like that) and the rear only is the older width
