You said it happens between 1000 and 2000 RPM. What gear are you in when it happens?

Doesn't matter what gear the car is in. Happens more in the lower gears cause you generally power on in them more than the cruising gears.

Odd clicking sound in 118TSI under acceleration
I have an issue too infrequent for me to diagnose is an odd ticking (quite loud) when accelerating under certain conditions. This also has happened when using the cruise control to accelerate.
Basically I will put the foot down (not all the way) and all of a sudden quite fast repetetive ticks (ticks really is the best word for it) come out from under the bonnet. I take my foot off and it stops. Put my foot down again and the car accelerates fine.
Don't know if this is disaster waiting to happen or simply the car unable to keep up with the acceleration demand.
Any help would be great.
p.s. did look over the forums first before posting. If I missed something please don't flame.Last edited by Corey_R; 04-08-2010, 11:53 AM.

I have the same issue davewave. Car is in for 15k service today and I have brought it up with them to check. They probably won't find anything. Will let you know the outcome. I find it happens a lot on a small incline at low speed. Accelerate to get up the incline and it is very obvious. Trouble is it doesn't happen all the time. About 4 loud clicks.....__________________

It's a fault in the supercharger clutch, I've already had a water pump replaced for it, used to happen one or twice a week, but since it was changed it barely happens once a month.

Curious why a thread about a mechanical noise in a 118tsi was merged with one about a GTi.

I've fixed it up. One of the other mods may have not understood what the issue is.
If this is the "supercharger clutch chirp" though, then it'll need to be merged into that thread....
though, I don't really understand how 4 clicks can be confused for a chirp...

It's not the chirp, it is more of a rattle (sounds like a busted CV joint) and its like the clutch is engaging and disengaging multiple times very quickly probably more like its slipping though. Happens very rarely to the point where it's impossible to reproduce, I've had the water pump replaced which fixed the issues..... i thought, but it's still there. But happens a lot lot lot less now, lucky to be once a month.
Some people may not even know its happening. if you have to windows up and music on you may not notice apart from the fact the car mildly bunny hops a bit as it does it.
I've also noticed it used to do it almost every time without fail after i took the car to car lovers to get washed......
If you want a thread to merge it with, then merge it with my old one here. http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f112...ult-39593.html
