WHY??If you only intend to keep the car for 3 years i wouldn't either but if you want long time peace of mind over 5 years one shouldn't be with out it .

I see. It is interesting that in QLD, no one was willing to go any lower than what I got. The main city dealers are well into the early to mid $2k - maybe more competition in Sydney?

I'm sure that you can buy your extended warranty from out-of-state dealers as well though. So as triode12 has said before, go to the Extended Warranty thread in the MKV forum, and get it from the current cheapest dealer.

It's a bit sad to see so many VW owners feel the need to purchase extended warranty for ownership after 3 years. It's certainly a poor reflection on either former experiences of long term VW ownership or the realization that there will be expensive problems after 3 years of driving.

I have traditionally done close to 50,000km annually in my cars and after 9 months and 35,000km in this Golf that looks set to continue. Other than early oil usage it has been basically trouble free to date and I have chosen not to purchase extended warranty but whether I keep this car past 3 years will depend on how it performs in the next 2 years. I intend to keep it till 300,000km as I have my last few cars and can only hope it is as reliable and trouble free as the Forester that has done 231,000km to date. The original brake pads were finally changed at the last service. Or am I expecting too much? I'm certainly more fortunate than my brother's 18 month old Jetta that has just had a $960- 45,000km service which had to include new rear rotors and brake pads and was followed shortly after with a complete failure of the DSG. Up to the moment it stopped on the freeway it had behaved perfectly. The record of problems I read on this forum leaves me feeling very uneasy.

yeah, i was jsut about to ask, what r some issues that r common and expensive for the mk6 gti and from the previous mk5 gti. luckily i dont have dsg, partly cos i didnt like the system, but also from what i heard about potential issues

Forgive me my ignorance but I still don't understand what does VW warranty actually covers if you have to pay highly inflated ongoing service fees? What needs to break to be replaced by VW free of charge?

Your DSG? It seems that it is just waiting to happen. I have not been able to find any example of a high milage Golf ie. one that has done 200,000km + that has not had some problems but of course I'm aware that forums like these usually get more than their fair share of complaints and we just don't hear about the good stories.

Read your owner's manual - warranty coverage info is all there. I haven't researched what these extended warranties cover.

As I said before, buying this is purely peace of mind. I do not thrash my cars and look after them probably better than I look after my own health

But, given the complexity of modern cars and all the electronics, it is best to buy a form of insurance should something go wrong. The best thing I can point to which reinforces my faith in any product, (especially VW), is that they offer a 3yr warranty (extended) a hell of a lot cheaper than either Audi, Land Rover, BMW, Mini etc. All of whom go through Allianz. Having done subjects in actuarial studies, the basic premise of how this is calculated is risk so over a long period of tine, Allianz have worked out that on average, VWs have less problems/cheaper repairs than the other cars I have mentioned previously. Hence why the insurance for these cars are what they are.

I don't think any manufacturer, even Lexus (who are probably the most reliable in the world based on all JD Power studies) would say their cars are 100% perfect so this just gives us the consumer comfort that we can enjoy trouble free motoring.

I'd disagree as any thing could blow, e.g. Turbo, RNS system etc which would cost way more than $1,700. The DSG insurance is just the icing on the cake....

I had my DSG gear box replaced and i was told it cost over $10,000 /

It just appears from what I read on this forum that the DSG is the most complained about system in any VW, both from an inconsistent operational point of view as well as troubles/failures. It seems like owners are doing VW's development for them.

I read the article, and apart from a line about dealers not being allowed to pressure you into buying an extended warranty, I'm not really sure of the relation of anti-lemon laws and extended warranties. If the car has survived 3 years, it's surely well past the stage of being "a lemon"
