  • RNS510 - Playing DVDs

Looking at the user manual and some mentions on other threads, it appears the standard RNS unit should play DVDs when the car is stationary.

I tried to play a couple of my shop purchased DVDs and got a region code error. I know the region code requirement is common with regular DVD players where you set the region as part of the setup when you first fire up the unit.

I figure the RNS is still set to a Euro DVD code.

Is there someway to change the region code in the RNS from the screen menus or does this require more major intervention?

From what I recall on international forums from when the RNS 510 was released, the region code gets set when you put on the navigation maps. So if you have the Australian ones on there already and you're getting region code errors, that don't sound right

I have the same issue with mine and from what I've read it needs to be changed via the diagnostic port which means either via VAG-COM or your dealer.

I had to use VAG-COM to set mine — as delivered the setting was for mainland China!

The dealer's service guy claimed not to know how to set it — said he'd had several queries, would find out and get back to me. Of course he never did...

@ elisiX — There is a way to change the video playback from stationary only, but even if you find it, please don't.

Here in Victoria it's illegal (big $ and demerit points if caught doing it) for any video playback screen to be visible from the driver's seat.

          Makes sense to me.

going off topic here but anyone seen the display in the new range rover? displays 2 screens on the 1 screen but can only see the DVD screen from the passengers side...

That's something VW should bring out next

Yeah - that was on Top Gear UK two weeks ago. It's a good application of a fairly recent LCD technology. The screen has horizontal prisms over each column of pixels allowthing this to happen. Maybe we'll see that on the replacement of the RNS510

Knowing VW Australia, they'll introduce it as a $3000 option.

The RNS510 is already $2500, so if a replacement had the ability to have two individually operated 'interfaces' running (which requires more memory, processing power, etc etc) then $3000 would be comparitively cheap
