Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Speedo Display in the MFD - software bug?

I test drove a MK6 GTI today. I went through the MFD options and found the one called alternative speedo display... I was actually specifically looking for it, as I much prefer a digital readout.

Only problem though... it only shows in mph. Not km/hr. I checked the units and even the language (UK english), but nothing would change it.

Same problem as shown in this thread for the R36...

I asked the dealer and he said it could be done... insisted he show me, 10 mins later and it's still mph

Does the mech dept at dealers have the ability to change this, or was that just dealer BS x2.

    Anyone know a workaround?

The "Alternative" in "Alternative Speed Display" means it will be the opposite of whatever your analogue speedo is, it's meant to be this way. It comes in handy for example in Europe where some countries use MPH and others use km/h.

If you want a digital speed display in km/h you just need to scroll through with the up/down arrows on the steering wheel when on the normal display until it says "Speed 0km/h". Eg. when it's displaying average fuel consumption/oil temperature/time travelled/distance to empty/whatever scroll through and you will find the digital speed readout in km/h.

Hope that helps. I would take a pic/video but I've got a Mk5 with the old menu system which doesn't have a digital speed display and my dad's Mk6 is parked at the airport.

Edit: The picture in the thread you linked shows the alternate speed display where the temperature normally is (as it's supposed to be)... the normal digital display in km/h will come up where this picture shows "Range 300km"

      This vid will probably help:

Was done in a US-spec Golf GTI but he demonstrates switching b/w miles per hour and kms per hour in the digital speed display.

        MFD question

i didnt seem to find the answer to this on the search function so i guess i might ask here.
i got a golf 118 tsi and the mfd's alt speed display only has mph and not kph, is there a way to change it?
like if i turn it off, the big display shows km/h but the alt speed display is gone and has temperature instead. so thanks to anyone that can help and a cookie too!

Have you RTFM as I'm pretty sure it covers it in there.

I merged your thread into here, as the answer is above (although I see Maverick just got in too, and he's also got the correct answer )

              If all else fails... (x) mph x 0.6 = km/h

                *cough* other way around....

                mph x 1.61 = km/h
(or 1.609344 if you have to be more precise)

It's easy to change this. Of course, that would require remembering where in the MFD it is, but there's a setting for km/h or mph, including US or UK for consumption. It's something like the second or third last option on the main MFD menu to go into the choices.

This one's a bit tricky from memory (and unfortunately, it's not properly documented in the manual - like many things related to the MFD).

I've only found the option to disable the alternate speed and enable the separate MFD page for km/h. Setting the units to km/h (MDF settings -> Units?) doesn't change it. Maybe it's not possible - at least without Vag-Com?

Right, so, by a process of deduction, to get km/h on the Alternate Speed Display, you need to set your Units to a US setting - either "mpg (US), mi" or "mpg (GB), mi" - and then the primary digital speed will be mph, and the alternate in km/h. Pity that's then tied to mpg for your fuel readout.

I'm happy with my speed display as a separate MFD page, personally.

Haha, yeah, something like that! To be fair to myself I meant to put (x) mph / 0.6 (rather than multiply, but I just had a brain fade)...

Why does my golf 103 dsg display mph when I set units to metric

The MFD displays mph even though all settings are set to metric ie litres/100km etc.

Anybody got any ideas of where I can get rid of the MPH setting in the MFD??

                            cheers Michael

I'd start by opening the glove box, pulling out the leather binder and reading the manual!
