  • RNS 510 Hard drive question..

    Hi All,

Just a question regarding the hard drive.. is the idea that we can store music on it? if so how do we transfer it? Can we store photos? videos?

    Cheers!

      Storing on the HDD

I put music on my HDD I bought a 2gig sd card and transfered via that. I haven't tried photos but avi's mpg's and wmv's don't work. But you can make folders and sort your music that way.

The hard drive is 30GB, but only 19GB is available for music. You transfer via the interface, which is quite straightforward and also explained in the manual.

You can't transfer via the MDI, either from iPod or USB - the latter I find a stupid limitation. The only methods of transfer are via CD/DVD, and SD card. I had trouble with DVD transfer - it was extremely slow and repeatedly gave disk read errors. I recently transfered 1.8GB of music via an SD card, which took about an hour. You can do this with the ignition off and the car locked. The current firmware only allows a 2GB SD card, but I've read that there is an update available to allow up to 32GB cards. I'm a little cautious about a firmware upgrade coming from a forum (not this one), so I'm not going to install it until it comes from an official source.

          Great thanks for that guys!

What compression options do we have? Is it only MP3?

          Cheers!

            +1

MurphyTheElf - apparantly if you ask your service dept nicely enough at next service, they will be able to do it for you (or that's what I've read from other members on here)

Roy - if you don't know what you are talking about please refrain... there is no USB connectivity on an RNS510, so I guess you would be wrong. The MDI option provides a USB connection, but you can't use it to copy files.

Yep, SD card is the quickest way to get files on to the HDD in the RNS510. It'll copy 2GB in about 30 minutes from an SD card. Still sooo slowwww....

The only video that the RNS510 will play is DVDs.

As Murphy says, you can't transfer via the MDI - the MDI uses the external CD stacker connection, with some additional data passed in - it is not an 'external drive' connection as such, so no copying data. Copying from DVD is woefully slow - about 1GB in 30 minutes (the time it takes for the RNS to auto turnoff after you leave the car).

I don't bother with copying data to the hard drive any more - I have a 32GB SD card and have upgraded my RNS to the new firmware so it will read SDHC cards. I sync it on my PC MUCH faster than trying to copy data to the HDD...

Quality of tracks played from HDD is dependent on the quality of the track... if you get my drift. Try a 96kbps MP3 and it will sound crap. Play a 320kbps MP3 and it will sound brilliant.

im getting GTI with RCD510, if i plug in a 32gb SD card full of music, what will i use my MDI for apart from charging my Iphone.

                        Seems useless now?

hehe I know what you mean.. I have that and I have the 20gb hard drive with the Sat Nav aswell!

Oh well.. at least you will always have the option? MDI isnt much compared to the cost of the car

MDI is still handy - will charge phone, and also will allow you to play (and remember position) of podcasts, audiobooks etc.

Use the MDI to keep the phone charged while you use it for sat nav..........
Otherwise there isn't really any point to it.
