    Fled the hot weather of Adelaide yesterday and drove the brand new car over 800 kms to Melbourne.

    Engine temp was stable he whole way but oil temp got up to 103 C. I went through the manuals (man there is a lot of reading there) but could not find anything about acceptable oil temp range.

    Anyone know the level when you should be alarmed or do you just wait for the MFD to tell you?

    Drive over was fantastic and went very quickly. Ride on 18s was fine even over some broken sections. Leather seat was comfy. Only problem was speed limit

    Today I am running around to meetings and trying to learn how to drive the Sat Nav. Pretty funny that it did not recognise the existence of South Yarra when I tried to enter my hotel address. Might have to RTFM.

    Car might be understated but it is attracting a lot of attention. People pointing, taking photos with mobiles etc. Coming from a 15 year old Honda this is very new to me.

    Off to the track day tomorrow with possibility of rain - that could make it a bit exciting. Will take the camera and try to get some shots

    That's a good question. I know from watching the Nascar religiously that oil temps are usually always higher than water temps. Since water in the GTI's sits at 90 degrees, 103 for the oil doesn't sound bad at all.

    I too would be interested to know when you need to start backing off, but I'd say it's much higher than that. Plus, the car has a warning light for when it really does get too hot.

      103° should be fine, although that's getting up there for "normal" driving. I'm guessing the weather was still pretty warm, though.

      I think the highest I've seen in my S3 was 112° after fanging it about for 15-20 minutes on some twistys.

      One question, are you able to keep the oil temp display active for as long as you choose? In the S3 it will only display for 15 seconds, or thereabouts before it reverts to the menu, or previous selection in the MFD. I'd much prefer if you could monitor it at all times, like I can in my 30 year old car, haha.

        The manual references I could find say that you get a warning light on the dash and then a warning on the MFD. I think if you get to a warning on the MFD you are probably in strife.

        are you able to keep the oil temp display active for as long as you choose?
        I can't recall whether the oil temp ceased to display or whether I just scrolled back to standard display. Will check this and get back to you.

          don't worry that perfectly normal for that temp .when you go on your track day you should see it up around 120-125 which is also fine no harm and nothing to worry about

            When running satnav, as far as I can tell tell satnav will not allow display of other options. MFD is used to show an arrow for route.

            When satnav not running (all the way home tonight) the oil temp option continued to display - oil temp after running for a while stop-start city driving was between 93 and 97.

            Had already decided to sneak a peak on the MFD tomorrow after track laps.

            Hope to get a shot at a full tilt launch control start too.

              Really? On the MKV you could move away from the directions on the MFD whilst navigation was active :/

                Still can on MK VI. Can be handy to see what's on the stereo while the map is on the RNS 510. When I start looking at all the stuff in the MDI, I get in trouble from Mrs cme2c. And woe betide me if I leave it anywhere but on "range" if I've been driving the oops! her car.

                  Just in case the fuel gauge fails to give an indication of when the petrol is running low.

                    We pre traded her Honda and waited for the Golf. In the meantime she borrowed my Peugeot. One night I get home "I think your car needs petrol" get in turn it on. Yellow warning light in the fuel gauge, car computer reports 20km to empty, LOW FUEL WARNING flashing on the display, alarm going BONG! BONG!

                    Good job we live close to a servo.

                    Before cars warned you, fuel filters were regularly replaced in previous cars as they were full with all the crap from the bottom of the tank.

                      Except of course the fuel pickups are at the bottom of the tank so this is really an urban legend for any car with a plastic fuel tank. Look at how long fuel filters last in modern cars and often they're only changed because of the manufacturers recommendation.

                        No legend in a 86 Accord ( with 480,000 kms on the clock when it was written off) or a Volvo 760. I was just glad the filter for the Volvo was identical to a Magna filter.
