How many car owners can say that? It's usually one or the other.
That thought never tires nor ceases to be cool :-p I keep thinking teenage me would think this is mega bodacious awesome dude (although would need some crash overnight rebrainwashing to realise the capacity and cylinders are not necessary in the new world for performance)

The more parts a motor has, the greater the chance of something going wrong with it. Having turbo & supercharger is adding complexity to the design of a simple & straightforward piston motor. Other makes are now coming out with tri-turbo motors, that's 3 x chance of having a turbo fail. DSG likewise.

I'm not sure what I'll do with my two year old 118TSI. So far I've had a clutch pack done. The engine hasn't blown up yet which is good.
I do LOVE the car. It's a real pleasure to drive. But it's only a matter of time before the engine ****s itself or the clutches need replacing again. There is no way on earth I'd keep it past warranty. If I have to I'll sell it and downgrade to something reliable.
We have a Polo GTI that is only 8 months old and it is an unreliable bucket of junk to be honest. Excessive oil consumption so they replaced a pipe. That hasn't fixed the issue so now they are measuring oil consumption and I just know it's to see if it fits into the engine replacement box or not. Coolant loss resulting in a water pump replacement. This weeks issue was a faulty air pressure sensor. It blows black soot out the exhaust so it just seems obvious that oil gets past the rings. From what I've read and experienced it is a faulty design, plain and simple.
I can see why they have dropped this engine completely in the MKVII's and I hope for their sake they have fixed the 7spd DSG.
Wonderful cars to drive but for me reliability is critical. I drive around every day for work so the car MUST work. Having it in for warranty work so regularly is just not acceptable.

I'll throw my 2 cents into this thread...
I've ordered a Toyota 86.
18 months to 2 years ago I was within a bees ***** of ordering either a Polo Gti or Golf Gti. Initially it was dealer arrogance that put me off - several VW dealerships treated me like they were doing me a favor. After I read more about the niggling issues, DSG failures, and the cost outside of warranty, I slowly backed away.
That said, I still like to log onto Watercooled every now and then for several reasons:
1) It's one of the best enthusiast websites I've come across. People on here were nothing but helpful and enthusiastic.
2) I still love cars of all shapes and sizes.
3) VW are producing some fantastic cars - they just need to acknowledge and address the perceived quality issues.
4) Enthusiast websites tend to make you hyper-aware of the problems that exist with a model. If you experience them yourself then I can see why that would taint your view of a brand (I still struggle with Mazda for that reason) but for prospective owners they can be a blessing and a curse if you read too much!Last edited by Molotov; 29-01-2013, 09:24 PM.

There is nothing worth than a slavish fan boy with a chip on his shoulder.
The i30 is a good small/medium car. And reliable too. Far more so than his experience with the 118tsi (and he is not alone in that - a number of government agencies used to get them for staff and now don't due to appalling reliability).
That model is going to impact on the reputation of VW and will probably cause some loss of sales.Audi S3. Sold

That was a genuine Samsung holder for the Galaxy S2. Was great. Only now I've got the Galaxy S3 4G.
Just because the engine had some problems or was expensive I wouldn't call it that bad (this is the *Appreciation thread* remember, there are other threads). You have to be amazed at how much bang (power) for you buck (engine capacity) when you tune one of these. There must be plenty of other 'normal' owners of these cars who don't post on forums and so on who haven't had any issues. Plus those with the Polo GTI and equivalent Skodas. With the early MK6 7spd DSGs it just appears that they cut the operating margin too fine and a number of people exceeded it as they hit between 20,000 - 30,000kms.
It doesn't bother me so much that a couple of 118's were lemons as much as how those customers were treated. With such a big company you'd like to think the problem could escalate quicker and get them back on the road with an emergency loan car within a day or two, or just replace it.Last edited by Ryan_R; 30-01-2013, 12:00 PM.
