  • 118 TSI squeal noise problem on acceleration

Just as a matter of interest - how many of you are experiencing the squeal from your 118TSI?

More info here if you don't know what I'm on about!

Keep in mind though this chirp seems to develop anywhere from 1000kms to 3500kms mileage.

Might be related to different driving styles thus the differences in when it appears.

Agree, please only vote if you've done at least 3,000 km. It may not show up any earlier.

The good news is the squeak gets softer!

I do have a light squeal on acceleration but its a continuos one. I think its coz of the supercharger thats in the TSI. Doesnt a supercharger make a mechanical whine when its working from about 2000rpms to 3500rpms

I hear a squeal but a very soft one

          tell me if im lost

He he... good spot... i mean if you don't have a squeak & have done less than 3,000km.... it's a little premature to be voting. Of course, if it's developed, then hit yes.

From recent days, I found a slight squeal noise as you guys described. But it seems softer and only appears in the first to second gear. Mine is done 2500km.

So I am wondering, if the squeal only comes at lower gears?

not for me. the squeak is persistent and comes in at any gears.

My car only does it under moderate acceleration from 3rd gear or higher if the supercharger hasn't already been engaged. e.g. if i gradually build up to moderate throttle then floor it, no squeak - but if I go from no throttle to medium it will squeak.

                  1st & 2nd don't seem to trigger the squeak.

As i was saying in the other thread, the squeak seems to be getting softer. If I change the gears manually using the tiptronic i hardly hear the squeak (unlike the auto shifting which tends to request more sudden load of the supercharger). That's probably why manual drivers don't hear it as much.

Its pretty interesting. So the noise reaches a acceptable level?

Yeah... it's not as noticeable and using the tiptronic tends to not set off the squeak through more gradual acceleration (which is my normal driving style in a manual)

Sorry, I think it appears after third gear, as at 1st and 2nd gear, the car is not speed up yet. It apparently softer and hardly to hear. I think it will become louder in the future.

Should we refine the poll to also guage manual versus DSG?

The whine i think is normal (its the supercharger working). The problem is the Chirp (short and sharp sound right at the begining when the supercharger engages)

I concur, its normal to have a continuous squeal or whine
