  • Seating for a bad back

Hi....I have a bad back and hip. I have been driving a 2005 Accord Euro Standard. I do a lot of driving from job to job around town. The Euro has been a good car and has not been too bad on the back. Time for a new car and the Golf is my preferred choice.

Do any of you have any comments/experience with a bad back on the seating of the standard cloth seats vs the Sports cloth seats for a bad back?

I have been also looking at the Mazda SP3.

    Thanks!

Surely this is subjective, or at best based on the range of adjustment of the seat. Spend some time in them and see if you can find a comfortable, supportive position? Seems logical. That said, get an XR5 focus, I rate the Recaro's for comfort and support.

The sports seats have a lower lumbar adjustment which is electronic. I find it is helpful along with the heaters in the seat to improve the lower back. Try it on a test drive, ask the salesperson to show you how to adjust it, it moves up and down about 15-20 cm and pushes forward about 4-6 cm.

I agree, take along a magazine or book and just sit there in the showroom for a while and see how they feel. I find the heated seats seem to help when my lower back is playing up (but I believe it is possible to add a heating pad to just about any seat).

Yeah - any comments anyone puts here are going to be completely irrelevant to you. There are 30 vertebra in the spine, as well as discs, several muscle groups and millions of nerves - and everyone's "bad back" is caused by something different and impacts combinations of these things. The only relevant advice is as others have mentioned - grab one of the cars and see whether it's comfortable for you over an extended seated period.

            Back does not hurt

Hi, I thought 8hrs behind the wheel of anything caused my back to ache, before we bought the Golf. Now it only aches when I get in the other car.
I think you are on the right track.

Thanks for the input.....I did sit in the Sports seat for 20-25 mins and it feels pretty good. I understand that short of sitting in it for a 8 hour road trip it is hard to get an idea but it is nice to have some feedback........

I forgot to mention, make sure you get Cruise Control. CC allows you to move around a bit from time to time, which avoids some of the discomfort you get if you are "locked into" the one position because you have to hold your right foot on the acclerator.

I find the lumbar support to be inadequate for me, it doesn't push out enough. Not as much as my old Honda Accord.
