Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

          • 118TSI MY2010 30k+ on the clock. Sports kit fitted, Aircon running and firm tire pressure.

Driving at 110km/hr from Sydney to Lorne. Cruise control set to 116km/hr (110 on the gps)
            7.1l/100km on the MFD.
7.02l/100km based on the amount of fuel added and the km travelled.

City driving is getting me around 8.4 with lots of really short trips and sitting in traffic.

The Great Ocean Road, just past Lorne, is getting 10+l/100km. I just wish the tools in their Commodes and Falcons would give up and let the little hatch pass them like all the other slow moving vehicles.

            • ok in rocky at moment.. i got 908ks to low light drove another 40ks before i hit a servo & it took 47ltres so worked out to be 4.9 per hundred and to be honest it wasnt a 'good' trip for economy lol just constant hills & constant overtaking. plus about 200 farkin ks of roadworks south of rocky im talking stopping 10+ times sitting for 10/15mins each time just ridiculous really. but it done well

Hi Smokey, They're some pretty amazing figures.
I've got the 118TSI and by all accounts should be getting similar results on the open road. 6.8l/100km is the best I got on the way back from Bendigo yesterday. 116km/hr on the cruise control and 110km/hr in the real world.
To get 4.9l/100km you must be doing something special. Those road works would be part of the equation.
I found that travelling at 100km/hr compared to 110km/hr dropped the consumption by 0.5l/100km and the 60 -80km/hr sections in 6th gear (manual) were getting closer to the 5.5l/100km mark.
I'm quite amazed at how accurate the MFD has been from the get go.

Forgot to add that I floor it to redline every time I get the chance. It's not often you get the chance to do 0-110km/hr sprints on public roads without breaking any laws. I figure it's good to open it up anyway after hours at the same speed.
Given that behaviour I would expect my economy to suffer but not much over several hours of driving. Next long drive I'll test to see if it makes much of a difference.

                  • 100 octane is normally the ethanol stuff made by United. Nothing special really.

With figures like that you must have the worlds most fuel efficient golf. 10+ cents a liter is a bargain when most of us don't even come close to those figures. Heck, you could practicaly drive interstate to find cheaper petrol.

                        • 6.3 l/ 100kms for me this long weekend on the trip back to Sydney. No traffic and no sprints made a fair bit of a difference.
I'm pretty sure now that I could get it well under 6 if I wiped off a little speed and slowed down on the acceleration.
                          Safe driving everyone.

                            • Read out had 5.6L/100 average from Bathurst back to Sydney (was down to 5.4 coming out of the mountains). This is still under 6 as I've found my calculations when filling show it's 0.2-0.3 optimistic. I'm happy and surprised by that as I wasn't trying to save fuel at all.

                              • Just did my first fillup on a brand new Golf 77TSI - 40.8 litres after 736km, which works to 5.5l/100km

This was a mix of highway and urban driving, and while I wasn't driving with a lead foot, I sure as hell wasn't babying it. I'm absolutely astounded at how little it sips while giving a surprisingly large amount of power for a 1.2L engine.

With 15L left in the tank I'd likely have been able to push it past 1000km. Lord knows what I'd be getting if I actually tried to drive economically.
