Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

You mean the R right? I can easily average 7.0 or less to Mandurah and back with my GTI mk6. Will depend on the load and the way you drive of course.
During a trip down to Margaret River from Perth with 2 passengers and a boot full of water/food, the average on the trip guage was 8.5. On the way back with less in the boot it was 7.5. Air-con was always on for both trips there and back as well.
I had only done ~5000kms with the car just before the trip so it wasn't thoroughly "run in". Also I used Shell RON95 to MG but on the way back it was BP RON98 so maybe that made a difference too.
Personally I only noticed an improvement with the average for my day to day driving after 10000kms.

      • Our 90TSI manual has averaged 6.1L/100km up to 46,000km with a best a couple of times of 5.4L/100km. The most distance on one tank was 909km using 50L and gettig 5.5L/100km, which was almost into diesel territory. It took us the whole day of driving.

          • Loving my R. Never bother to look at fuel use because the vehicle is so much fun.

When the car tells me, I fill it up.

            Life is like that

Still, bloody amazed how good it is doing after only 3 days out of the dealers. Returning fuel consumption figures close to the GTI I had - same roads, same driving style. Must have a good one I guess.

            • My average over the first 6,000 km to date is 9.4 L/100km.

I live in the city, work in the city, so most of my driving is stop/start/slow. I think you can pretty much disregard the ADR combined figures for any car, unless you live in the country, as I've owned 3 brand new cars in the last 3 years and they have all been considerably higher than the ADR combined figures. The city and highway figures however, are pretty spot on I have found.

A fair amount depends on how you drive it too, it's so much bloody fun to drive the GTI with "enthusiasm".

9.4 L/100km is about half of what my 4 litre V6 Navara D-40 auto used to consume, so I'm not complaining....

You'd get even better economy if you listened to your car and changed up to 6th gear sooner. 70km/h in 5th is way too many revs, especially with the cruise control on.

Stick to your DSG son.. haha.. He is in 5th.. with MFD suggesting to shift up to 6th! ..

The MFD is stupid anyway.. i can be doing 40 in 3rd and it would be telling me to shift to 5th..

Oh I see - haha. Happy to stick with my DSG, that's for sure! I'm not surprised that it's telling you to change into fifth @ 40km/h, the DSG in auto mode would do that in some situations. But it can, because the low end torque can sustain it

I generally ignore that. I wish it could be changed to optimum change for performance. Fuel economy if neither here nor there.

Speaking of which, battled up the Pacific Highway with the AC on, then F3 then Terrigal Drive to Avoca Beach. Average of 8.3

I seriously don't know what some of you are doing to get low fuel economy. I just drive it, thrash it sometimes and generally hang on to gears for much longer than that stupid display says.
