It's factory fitted in that case.

Have you tried another ipod or iphone?

Call you dealer and book your car in after you have tested another ipod/iphone to make sure it's not something to do with yours. Read the manual as well as it may offer some advice regarding line levels (not sure if this is relevant).
    Hey Maverick,

    Thanks for your comments.

I have tried this with 3 different units, ipod 120gb, iphone 3g and iphone 3gs and also a ipod touch and they all produce the same result.

Funny fact the dealer said that the MDI will not charge the iphone but it does....

I'm going to try xblode's suggestion and get back with the results.

      • Just squeeze and pull. It will be stiff but it will come out. Ust a rag or cloth for extra grip in needed.

            Dad joke.

I've revived this thread hoping to get an answer for my situation.
Recently I purchased a 2010 model 118TSI under the impression that the MDI was a standard feature, as is listed in the brochure. Under the specs section it says "MDI with USB cable fitted in the center console. Optional cables available.Blah, blah, blah".
When I look in the center console all I can see is a 3.5mm aux in socket. What gives?
            It looks like this.

            The stereo looks like this.

Thanks for any input in advance.

            • You've got what I had 7 years ago with my Alpine head unit. I assume you want to run an iPod?
If so then you need to buy an iPod 12v charger with a (3.5mm) line out. (Mine was (still is) a Belkin).
Then get a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable. (I bought one in Myer last year).
Plug the charger into your 12v socket.
Plug the other end of the charger into your iPod.
Plug one end of the 3.5mm cable into the line out of your charger and the other into the AUX socket in the centre console.
Buy a decent iPod holder/dock or find somewhere handy for it to sit.
You will have to control the iPod by using the actual iPod, not he head unit, but your volume etc will be done by the head unit.
If you want head unit control of the music you will need an RCD-510 or an Alpine etc

              • Thanks Pual_R.
                No Apple products for me.
I'm fine for hooking up to the 3.5mm jack. What I'm looking for is the MDI.
                The brochure looks like this.

                Thanks.

                • Is that a 2010 brochure?
I know for the Golf R the MY12 model (from about July 2011) has MDI standard, but the earlier MY11/11.5 it was optional.

if you have only the aux input in the centre console the RCD-510, will only give you volume control and everything else is done on the Ipod. I think you need the MDI kit for full control from the head unit.

                    • Thanks for the reply.
It turns out I was using the wrong brochure for my comparisons.

My other thread is dealing with solutions for this mistake on my behalf. MDI , Bluetooth , etc.

Just incase anyone else reads this in the future and has similar confusion.
