I read something a while ago that said blue was the worst colour to look at for a while because it incurred the most visual fatigue; and of course, red was the best leaving you with the least fatigue. White is somewhere in between.
The dials in the 4 and 5 were really attractive...it's a shame they're not continuing it.

There is truth to that statement. Have a look at - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purkinje_effect - explains why red light, for example, is better than blue light under dark conditions. White light, of course, contains "all" colours and is therefore better suited to providing best visibility under a wider variety of lighting conditions.
I was told this by a BMW fanboy explaining why their cars have orange dials.
Prolly has a bit to do with the red mood lighting on the MKV as well.

i do find the blue spreads into the cabin alot more compared to ones in the bmw, but then again there is always the adjustment dial. does look better in blue though.
Yes, I sat in an MK5 with Blue dials other day and honestly, it seems more rice. I don't like it and I am glad they went the white dials. Much more upmarket feel to it.
When i was young, I had a civic with blue dials hahaha. Not a fan of them anymore

I agree. I had a Mk6 Loan car and the instrument cluster feels alot more upmarket. The white MFD makes the big difference for me (although much smaller than the full size Mk5)

I read somewhere that using blue and red colouring was much better for the eyes. Good to see VW have gone for looks rather than health of driver .
Having had a GTI for nearly 4 years I actually prefer the blue, but hopefully will be able to compare when I have the Mk VI sitting along side the Mk V.
