  • The Golf GTD diesel

    Hey guys !

Some of you have been helping me pick between a Golf at about 44k and the GTI which I'm still looking into..

But I wanted to know if anyone has heard anything about this Golf GTD and what people thoughts where ?

Is this car a long away in Australia ?

I have been doing the sums and it seems it's better to buy a diesel over the new tsi if you are not concerned about the power .... with the petrol golf getting around 550-650km city driving and the diesel getting about 800km - 900km city driving

but not having owned one before I'm not to sure..

Volkswagen has revealed the new diesel flagship for its MkVI Golf range ahead of its official debut at the 2009 Leipzig Motor Show in Germany.

    thanks for your help guys..

I doubt that car will get here before the new GTI if it even gets here...

At this stage it's all "planned". God only knows when it's up for sale.

Perhaps you could get a deal on an 08 TDI? Can't say I'm an unhappy, 850km every tank driven hard, camper.

Yeah not a bad thought getting 850km a tank.. I'm thinking about the new tdi engine as this seems to have less noise... from what I have read...

Might be worth your while looking at a Skoda Octavia TDI. It has sports suspension and the new hi-po CR engine that the Golf GTD will have (if it ever gets to Oz).

850 a tank would be great. Ive been very unkind to my car of late, i get to drive it from richmond into the city 3 or 4 days a week and thats all it gets to do these days, im still getting about 650-700 a tank. its about 4km of stop start traffic lights in peak hour driving. MFD usually tells me between 10 -12 l/100 each way.

Looking forward to next week, got a couple of days in frankston so should pick up the average a bit.

Also having just had my car in this week for 24 hours i managed to get a GT 1.4 TSI out as a loaner. it was the manual version, and to be honest i loved driving manual again. I do miss it good and all as the DSG is.

BUT, power wise, the TSI is nothing on the TDI, The service manager took my car home for the night (he is a mate) and could not believe how much more go it has over the TSI (His current car), and commented on ho much the ESP light was flashing just driving it normally. I was glad to get back into my diesel and take it home.

The GTD will make it here approx 6 months after the GTI, it's replacing the 2.0 TDI GT from the Golf V.

If you're talking 'saving money on fuel', the only diesel that saves you money on fuel compared to the much higher asking price is the i30.

The only reason to buy a diesel is because you like it, and many people do.

If you want to save money on fuel, convert to LPG with proper liquid injection technology and get great economy, great power, great price.

                    Steve,

Something is a bit weird with your lower economy. I drive into the city and back, not peak hour that much mind, but I do very little highway driving. I'm up my car for the rent daily, and if there's a burn to be had, well I'm in. And if I don't get 800 plus out of a full tank of BP ultimate, I'd be concerned.

Secondly the TSI power is deceptive. I liken the TDI to a two stroke MX'er, that has this big obvious mid range hit, whereas the TSI has a much more linear, and subtle power delivery. I hate to say it but lightened or not I reckon Polar would have me from the lights, stock for stock.

Oh and a manual TDI is indeed fun, but you have to like changing gears, a lot. 90% of the time it rocks. If you have a sore clutch foot, tired legs, or just want to cruise, well it's not as much fun!

You can use that saved money to have body panels put back on.

I can still get 5.? on most long trips, usually around 5.4 - 5.6 running with the cruise set on 110 - 120 depending on limits. Next time i have the car in the city ill see what my average speed/time is and post it up to compare. I do give it a bit of stick where i can, but on my commute there is little or no opportunity as its all bumper to bumper stuff.

I have been driving diesels for about 15 years now, love them, and the GT TDI was a no brainer for me when i saw VW was bringing it in. Thats not to say i couldnt go a GTI or an R32, i like to mix it up a bit next time.

I work with diesel and filling up the tank with unleaded is a common occurrence.
Its OK if the engine isn't started. Its costly if it is.
