Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • GTI 0-100 Chipped/flashed times

    Guys,

What can you expect your 0-100 time to be after a flash. I know it makes a huge difference to driveability but does it equate to serious acceleration differences. I only ask as the boys in the POLO section have been talking about 2 second improvements. I suppose the other questiion is who makes the flash who gives you the faster times?.

2 seconds simply out of a chip?!?!? ...that brings the car down to a 6.2sec sprint...2 seconds is a LONG time. i can't see how the FWD can get the power down efficiently enough to skim 2 seconds off. if it does, i'll sell my mk2 and buy a 2nd hand polo.

i've read somewhere that 0-100 time in golf drops to about 0.7-0.8 sec.

We have some performance box logs & customer reports of sub 6 second 0-100 with chip (and maybe chip & exhaust).

DSG - I think it would be easily possible with launch control.

Manual - a little harder to control...

0-100 is meaningless really. so dependent on so many factors unrelated to the car's ability and its such a small speed bracket. if you want a better indication of performance look at trap speeds over the 1/4mile. but thats obviously still dependent on how well the driver can control traction and how fast he/she can shift.

Rolling acceleration times are probably the most meaningful measure...
            Nothing to see here...

but then that goes to the other extreme. for instance all the new generation diesels which have incredible rolling acceleration but bog down off the line.

Well trap speed doesnt have that much influence on that. So really its a pretty damn good measure.

You can look at times on cars that run 10s, and some will be 160mph and others 130mph, pretty obvious whats going on.

standard form VW claimed 8.3sec 0-100
just with the chip people have claimed around the 6.1/6.2/6.3sec mark for 0-100. i have not tested it myself.

quickest i've heard (with minor mods) from here i think is a 6sec 0-100 pass. i think that was with chip, good tyres and an upgraded intake.

obvisouly it's not something you'll get to every run but still a damn good improvement from 8.3sec....and for only $1,500

The 0-100 of 8.2 seconds quoted by VW was very conservative, most of the actual road tests returned figures of around 7.5 seconds. This would translate to a figure of around 6.5-6.8 for a chipped car.
No way a chip is worth 2 seconds off standard.
                      Cheers

My own personal testing of before and after with two different DIY chip tuning products - which are both on the conservative side compared to Revo, GIAC, etc. shows about a 0.5 second decrease in the 0-100 time for a golf GTI. If you could get the extra power down I'm sure it would be quite a lot better, because the in gear acceleration is much more brisk.

In the real world, GT manual, stock ECU, furious left hand / foot:

                          numerous XR6 / S packs....... draw
                          WRX STI uphill from lights.......draw
                          VT 255 clubbie .........draw!

Now in my mind, the STI and Clubbie pilots were bad drivers, but they both instigated a drag, so I thought "what the heck". I don't for an instant think the diesel is a fast 0-100 car, but hey, I'm getting more and more cocky!

Can only imagine what you GTI flyers can achieve, on private test tracks of course.
