Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Grinding/ scraping noise when the car has been turned off and turned back on

    Hi All,

I have a 2008 golf tdi with 129,00 kms on the clock and recently had a major service and timing belt changed.

On 3 occasions the noise occurred after I had been driving for about 10-20 mins turned the car off to duck into the shops quickly, restarted and went to take off. The noise is pretty loud and sound like it's coming from the underside of the engine( but not100% sure)The noise doesn't happen when I turn. When it has occurred I pull over turn the car off and sit for about 5 mins and restart then the noise disappears. The noise hasn't been constant and has happened kind of randomly.

I've done a general search on google of what it could be and it states that it might be bearings, cv joints or differential fluid.

I have no idea about cars but would greatly appreciate any ideas of what it might be.

    Thank you!

    Does the noise happen
    • when moving
    • when stationary
    • does it change with vehicle speed
    • does it change with engine speed
    • does it change dependant on selected gear
    • which gear box do you have
    MK4 GTI - Sold
    MK5 Jetta Turbo - Sold
    MK5 Jetta 2.Slow - Until it dies.

-Happens when I move. Never when stationary
-gets louder as I increases speed.
      - not sure about engine speed
      - doesn't matter what gear it's in
      - it's a Dsg 6 speed
