Yep so problem detected and my mid 08 build GTI is currently having a new steering rack installed.

23700km. grinding started at about 18000km.

Am loving how VW just fix things when its obvious they're broken. Just wish the farken DSG would do its little trick for them so they can fix that too.

New rack is in, all good.

Made a bit of noise on the way home but the drive to work this morning it has settled down nicely.

The constant centre console noise has also been fixed but unfortunately at the expense of some plastic being damaged but they're fixing that no problems.

What is worrying though is they found fuel lines rubbing on the body/firewall....

Yom, it astonishes me how persistent you are with your vehicle. If i was in my right mind with the list of work you've had done i would have pursued a new car from VW as compensation.

I can put up with rattles, but if it were the gearbox continually playing up i would certainly be vocal about it. Don't think i could permit a transmission which continually has a mind of its own.

Unfortunately when it all just works I forget all the problems and just enjoy it for what it is...a bloody fantastic car. And then I get all clingy and forgiving.

Plus it is just euro trash built in south africa. I got over expecting it to be perfect. Next time I'll buy one built by people who give a ****. VW didn't shift production back to Germany for our Golfs for no reason. Going by history, Golf quality went crap when they started bringing the SA built models here.

hahahaha i think cars with flaws give it "character".

No doubt volkswagens and specifically the DSG system is a remarkable design, but their build quality is less then impressive. This may be a biased remark though.

My japanese 2.0 litre mx-5 was almost bulletproof.

I definitely agree with the S.A, remark. The german built ones fare quite abit better.

Careful, the only person who might defend the SA built Golfs is Mav...and we know what he's like when he gets into an argument...horney sausage dog pig rooting everyone's legs.

                edit: oh noeh...he's watching too

                  new steering rack

I have been told i need a new steering rack by VW after i had spent £900 on springs, mounts bearing ect, feel like the going into a hole and hide. Does anyone know were i can get a decent rack for a GTI MKV and any recommendations for fitters around NW London.

                  Kind regards

                  Bruce
