guys, just got my GTi last fri(FINALLY). its been great... seriously !!! No problems at all till this very night. Been avoiding the fwy. Weather been great too downhere at Melb. Wet and windy !!!

questions for ya all !!!

does 'engine braking' is healthy for turbo engines i.e GTI? does it drink up more fuel? i did it mostly when slowing down at intersection & bout to make a turn(love the sound). I did it often with my other diesel and vtec engines. ive read few sites thru google saying that engine braking can increase the cost of owning and operating a vehicle.

let me know your thoughts. Much appreciate it !!!

Engine braking, with the throttle closed doesn't use any petrol at all. The fuel is cut off by the ECU to reduce consumption.

If you cycle through the display functions available on your wiper stalk, one of them will display your current rate of fuel usage. When you back off the throttle ... that drops to 0 litres/100kms.

In all my years of motoring, I have never heard of engine braking increasing the cost of operating a vehicle.

If that were true, surely trucks would not use it, as their costs are already horrendous.

Slightly OT, but I'm not convinced the engine cuts the fuel right off. I know the readout may say 0.0 l/100, but hell, it doesn't idle indefinitely on fresh air, does it? It may well use bugger all, but 0? I don't think so.

Noticed that myself. Perhaps it's a negligable amount. I've actually seen it read 0.1l/100km as well.

The average consumption seems to match up fairly well at the pump though, I can predict with reasonable accuracy how many litres it'll take to fill her up on a Wednesday.

The wheels are turning the engine, it uses ZERO fuel - The injectors are shut off.
