Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Dodgy Hazard Light

This is my first post, although Im a long time reader. Had a recent problem on my GTi (got it back in Feb) and wondered if anyone has had a similar issue.

Basically I went to press the Hazard light button on the dash after a quick deceleration on the F3, and the whole button collapsed into the dash.....very disconcerting ! Its not like I mashed it too hard either. Will get it sorted on warranty but was surprised as so far the car has been faultless.

Welcome to the forums. Before we go any further, it's GTI, not GTi.

You do realise that the GTI is set up with emergency hazard activation under heavy braking? Why go for the switch, there's a good chance it would've kicked in if you were braking hard enough. Anyways, pressing the hazard switch under a huge amount of deceleration inertia and Gs is going to make your finger very heavy in the process... I'm not surprised that you've pushed it all the way into the dash. Have you tried reinstalling it yourself? There's a good chance the dealer will charge you to clip the switch back into place, as they won't fault it warranty-wise.

The hazzard switch just clips in from behind, and it will easily clip back in. Perhaps it wasn't assembled perfectly, and the only hassle is pulling the dash apart to get to it, whuch you can indeed do yourself, especially if you look up the sticky on dash's.

Yes, the auto hazard light function is pretty cool. This was when stationary after braking to alert traffic, so it wasnt in the heat of the moment or anything. Will see how I go in doing a DIY job ! Have also updated my sig with the I

The DIY thread in this section has a great pictorial I used to great effect. Just be very careful levering out the top grill, as I found it easy to mark. You have a speaker up there as opposed to us poorbie Gt and lesser types, so you'll probably have to work around that. If you encounter the tamper proof torx screws which are all over the Golf, supercheap have a very nice and inexpensive pocket knife style torx set for under $10. They are expensive most everywhere else.

Is your auto hazard light function enabled by default?

Is there any way to test this emergency feature? I am assuming that this is also fitted to the Jettas.

Slam on the brakes and try it.

If you want to see what happens without slamming on the brakes there is a test button located in the middle of the dash above the headunit.
