Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Wow, I'm famous!

I must say I feel "right" driving this little car over the last one, as much fun as it was at the time, and the global impact is a big part of that. Also over an "ego" car.

Hate to tell you mate, but I rarely saw under 17L average in the FPV. You could get 11-12 on the open road, which was amazing for the car, but in traffic round town, one fang, and it hit the 20's. I flog the TDI and rarely get much over 6 as you rightly point out, optimistic as the computer may be. I know the Ford was no more "accurate".

I am absolutely in love with this VW!!

Quite a few people allude to a "jiggly" firm ride in the GTI.

I must say I did not notice this at all when test driving, in fact I found the GT TDI to be a little wallowy and vague in the front suspension, and the GTI just right.

I guess that driving the Jackaroo with its heavy duty springs, big bore shockers, and 40psi have numbed me to hard suspensions

And Kart racing for a number of years makes suspension redundant anyway

True, but if you looked at the amount of greenhouse & resources that go into building, furnishing & maintaining a house, then we should all be living in caves...

For what its worth, I never went ahead with the purchase because I was given a Jaguar XJ8 ... go figure ... BUT, we're now inheriting a Kluger from the same place so we will have two big cars and a daughter who will be learning to drive soon, so I'll be taking a delivery of a new white Mk7 comfortline DSG with the drivers assist package ... interesting times ahead.

If you're seriously considering getting a GT TDi keep in mind that they are fitted with a diesel particulate filter - its the only thing I HATE about my car and it gives me nothing but trouble. If you're going to be driving lots of short trips with plenty of traffic lights you will find that it will clogs up a lot forcing the car into active regenerations or forced regenerations. Basically you're going to have to drive the car quite consistently over 60kmh for about 10-15 minutes about 2 - 3 times a week to build up enough heat to burn off all the soot that gets collected in the filter. I have about a 20km trip to work trip every day which should be fine however I have nothing but 60kmh zones where traffic seems to do 55 all the time and I have about 10 set of traffic lights that always seem to catch me on a red light so I simply don't get it hot enough. I have found that with a DPF additive that lowers the burn off temp things are much improved but you have to factor in a can of this at $20-$25 a can every 1500-2000kms plus the annoyance of having to constantly find it in the shops and buy it. When the DPF is completely stuffed you're also looking at a $3000-$5000 replacement cost. Not trying to put you off what is a fantastic car but just be aware of the DPF issues.

Ended up going with the TSi Mk 7 with the 90KW engine ... got it two days ago and I still keep trying to find another reason to drive it somewhere. Thanks for the heads up though, I'll keep that in mind for my next purchase in about 2 years
