Each to their own I guess.

For my 07 Jetta, I'm happy to take it to a dealer while it's under warranty. I know all about apprentices working on cars etc but at the end of the day, the Jetta is not exactly a common car and I'd prefer someone who at least seen one before service it.

My main concern is though, having had a car that had many warranty issues in the past, I have also experienced the "goodwill" that comes from having a service history with the dealer. My last Land Rover had a gearbox and a ABS sensor ($3500 and $1000 respectively) replaced out of warranty. I seriously doubt they would have done that if it was never serviced there - it would have been "letter of the law" type stuff.

In fact I have seen that first hand - a vehicle with 3.5yrs/108,000kms on the clock had a head failure (turbodiesel). No servicing by the dealer (and fingers were pointed at out-of-specification lubricants, but I doubt that was the cause, but what can you do) - sorry no warranty goodwill - warranty is 3yrs/100k only. Repairs were to cost $12k, vehicle was worth $18k. He got $6k from the dealer for it, and walked away. Massive financial hit.

However, once it's out of warranty, I will still take it to a VW specialist (not a dealer). There is a lot to be said for being familiar with a vehicle, and unless it's a Commodore, Falcon or Corolla my opinion is that the local service monkey will not be alert for any 'common issues'. My 01 Jeep gets serviced by an independent, but one who is a Jeep expert.

my friend's Eunos 30x has been at Ultra Tune for 3 weeks and they still can't fix it with stalling issues. I did a bot of research of the net and fixed it in five minutes, free of charge, dirty throttle body sensor. How are ultratune going to do the rear brakes on a 3C Passat wihout VAG com, ie you need it to open the rear calipers. At least use a VW independent specialist.

            Hi all,

Had the Jetta serviced today at Barloworld Glen Waverly and was only charged $253.90. I thought this was pretty reasonable. It came back washed (lotta good seeing its raining today and tonight) and vaccumed. They also replaced under warranty the RHD drivers door lock actuator that was sticking and no charge for headlight aim check.

I compared this with car service link above and although about $40 dearer for the 45k service I then compared the 30k service last Dec where Barloworld charged me $200 cheaper then the guide suggests.

The experience was good today; greeted in the driveway where the fellow opened my car door, wrote down the rego and kms and asked me to give the slip to the lady at the door. She took the slip, selected my paperwork (prebooked the service 2 weeks ago) walked me over to the friendly service technican.

            All good!

              Ok - recommendations please

              Hi
My experience with dealer workshops has been absolutely disastrous. TAs who simply have no idea what they are dealing with and take no pride, supervised by mechanics that are now just counting profits. Saying this I’ve only just bought my first VW – which a dealer service centre (admittedly non VW) filled with the wrong oil.

Our other car (owned for 5 years now) isn’t exactly what you would call standard, with 6 computers running everything right down to the air suspension and hydraulic rollbars (soft ride in straight line but firms up in the corners it’s great). We’ve had our fair share of problems with it that ended the day I decided to find an independent brand specialist and haven’t looked back, costs are down but much more importantly it’s serviced properly and doesn’t break down with in the week! I’m serious I had to check every thing and nearly every time take it back in. After one service it dumped over a litre of oil on the floor when I got home, it wasn’t leaking when it went in – they had put the rocker cover on with out a gasket! Why was it off?! Nearly every time towards the end there was some stupid reason for keeping it over night too. The warranty list was huge and I am sure 90% of things didn’t need doing; they are too incompetent to actually find the fault (if there was one at all)- just start replacing really expensive parts and invoice the manufacturer. Unfortunately for me and others they are the only dealership in Brisbane.

I however wouldn’t go to someone like ultra tune as said above I want them to have some knowledge of the particular car and the equipment to plug into it.

So this is a question to put out there (or should this be a new thread?). Is the any independent VW specialist preferably east of the city in Brisbane? I’ve had one recommended already but would like further opinions please.

If you can find a GOOD private mechanic i think that they're the go. Because its their own reputation on the line and they put in the extra effort IMO.

Having said that i'm lucky enough to have a father who runs his own mechanical workshop so i never have to worry about all the dodgey crap that goes on.

I really feel for you guys that are taking your cars to dealers etc and getting ripped off!

I have a business card that was left on my drivers door while shopping.

The card was for a European car servicing specialist (northside Brisbane) who apparently has a lot of experience (was a technician in Germany) and deals with these types of cars (audi, vw, bmw) with a select group of employees.

I have no experience with tham as I have not called, but still have the card if anyone would like a pm for the details.

have found one in melbourne... go to him with all my cars and have found him to be great.
minor service for my polo and new beetle was around $200.. dealership was over $300.
main thing is i have gotten to know him over the last few years from the work he has done on my old bugs and trust him and his crew far more than i do a dealership. i know he wont bs to me.
he works on audis and vdubs new and old.

Glad to hear Barlo is performing, since that's where my car is coming from, and that's where it will be serviced.

I have at various times (while shopping around) spoken to the VW service manager at Barlo, and they will gladly show you a shedule of service costs on their computer screen.

I think you can watch your car being serviced as well.
