Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • TSI Rough Idle

    People,

The car has just hit 3000km and in the past 200km it has started running a little rough on idle.

If I fractionally hold the throttle down it clears up, it does it worse in gear but even in Park (DSG) it runs nasty.

I have recently put vortex 98 in but back to Ultimate now, I doubt it could be bad fuel as it is now back to Ultimate (Which I always use at the same petrol station) and I filled the CX-7 up on the same fuel at the same time and that is running fine.

I did disconnect the battery the other week to give the battery a good charge

That is all I can think of, has anybody got any ideas?

    Cheers

    Dan

You could try taking it to the dealer for a warranty check and fix.

Yes good point, however I am not in a position to drive the hour and half to the dealership and was hoping it would be something simple.

      Thanks anyway

        Hi Dan,
What's the idle speed like, could be a bit lower than norm? If it's not as simple as bad fuel I'd recommend taking it in. They're an awesome car (absolutely loving mine!!) but there is so many different systems to potentially go wrong I really wouldn't know where to start.

        Good luck with it

          Hey Paul,

Around 650-700 from memory. If I hold it at around 8-900 it is fine.

Will let OPVW know once I am home from Olympic Dam.

Get someone to check spark plug leads resistance ( it should be around 13000 ohm per foot). You'll often find that some times, they go, or insulation on them is bad so that they are arcing out on engine somewhere not caring enough spark... OR just a faulty spark plug

Under load it would be even worse....

            Or faulty injector(s)

Battery that is low on charge would not cause such a dramatic rough idle because it is getting charged by alternator, where alternator is pumping voltage out to charge....

Huh? Spark plug leads? Surely these engines use coil packs? If so there won't be any high tension leads to check.

A loose battery terminal can cause erratic idling. Dan682 what do you mean by rough idling? If the speed is varying slightly (sort of surging) then it could be just that you haven't tightened the battery terminals back up enough. Make sure that you don't tighten toooo much though.

                Thanks for the replies guys.

                Terminals are Tight as.

It is not surging, it is just holding the revs but is rough.

I will try and get it back to VW when I am back home. Still out at Olympic Dam in SA.
