  • Mk5 gt sport TDI DPF issues

    Hey everyone new to the forums here, seems like a great place for info! I have a few questions about my recently purchased golf mk5 gt sport TDI. I have owned the car for about a month and the DPF light kept coming on so I would do a high way drive and it would eventually turn off. Then the light got more frequent and I couldn't regen the DPF anymore so the car went into limp mode. I have taken it to a DPF cleaner and it has been cleaned but the DPF is in pretty bad shape and will not regen fully and it started blocking up again pretty soon. I was assured that my DPF was badly blocked and it will need to be replaced. A new DPF is somewhere in the price range of $4500 for a gt sport TDI. Plus labour fitting charges. Is there any other solution I have before I go and spend that much money as it does not really make that much sense to me as that is almost half the price of the whole car just for a particulate filter? Even a DPF removal or any suggestions or shops to call would be great. Thanks in advance

    Greg Roles will be along I soon I reckon. He had the same car and he cleaned out the DPF a couple of times after removing the core.

    DPF removal is illegal as I am sure you know.

      Ahh yes the old DPF...thanks Gav.

      Well your DPF cleaning place sucked, as they are indeed repairable, IF done properly. Not really surprising though as SO many people donlt properly understand DPF's and how they work / clog, and how FEW DPF cleaning products work on the real problem, the ASH from burnt oil, not the SOOT.

      You will need to take the DPF out of the car, it can be done jacked up on the floor, but given how long the tail pipe is off the DPF, it is a bit of a mission. Get a quote from an exhaust shop or a mechanic to take it off for you.

      It's then as simple as back flushing it with some serious water pressure, I cut mine open but doing it again I;d probably just find a way to connect a firehose up to the tailpipe and back flush it with that, you know it is working when fine "white sand" comes out. It's that oil ash that is causing the issue, it cannot be burnt down to zero by the car, and you need to physically backflush it out. If you are prepared to do some welding, cut the bottom off the DPF can and use a high pressure washer to backflush it like I did.

      Put it all back in and then use a borrowed Vag Com cable to reset the oil ash levels, there's info on doing that HERE, but a bit of research and you will be fine.

      If all that is beyond you / your budget, Liquimoly have a two part spray in solution that will in the least lower the amount of ash in your DPF, and you can buy the two solutions ( 5169 and 5171 ) pretty cheaply from Amazon and ECS Tuning - it seems to be crazy dear in the kit sold here. That is just sprayed under pressure into the top O2 sensor hole, left to sit, and this would be the easiest option, but I can't see how it would be as good as a total flush, but worth a try in the least.

          Ben I know of two DPF deleters ( one in NZ ) that have had a 60k and a 100k fine for DPF deletion in the last year, both had to close. This is not something to openly promote, or even do anymore, it is being actively prosecuted behind the scenes in tuning land.
