Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Questions about cosmetic repairs on Jetta (Wheels & interior)

    Hi all,

So I recently bought my first car, which is an 06 Jetta FSI manual. The car is in generally good condition, but there are a few minor, non-urgent repairs I'd like to find out how to do.

    1. There is this strange mark just above the radio. Not entirely sure what it is. Is it possible to replace this panel or restore it some other way?

    2. Some of the wheels are scuffed quite badly. I've been able to find a lot online about repairing wheels using various methods, but most involve repainting the wheels, which obviously wouldn't work with the 'bare' metal finish on these wheels. Any tips?

    3. The classic mk5 peeling window buttons. Where is the best source to get replacements? As this seems to be the only option.

Help with any of the issues above would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Michael

The mark near the radio looks like a chemical stain. It could be anything, maybe the mirror has let out the magic dimming goo, this happened on mk4 boras a lot. A wrecker would be best bet on this.

Wheels can be repaired by a specialist but you might want to look for aftermarket or score some oem when someone offers a sale on the forum.

Window master switch are easy to swap out. I got mine for $30 in usa. I did the ebay $8 one but it had green back light.

for the wheels I can highly recommend Neway Wheel Repairs - The Wheel Specialists.
They repaired a wheel on my Golf GTI that had gutter scrapes thanks to the wife... wheels were shadowchrome finish and they repaired to original (no painting) for $300.

Could have been a leaking air freshener that was sitting in the air vent, some of those can cause that sort of damage

That would seem pretty likely. The car had a solid air freshener in it when I bought it, but smells very strongly so I'd guess it had a liquid one in it too at some point. Trying remove the smell currently...
