Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 2.0FSI manual - weak first gear

My 2.0FSI seems weak in the first gear. It's almost like I'm starting in second gear. From when I had a Golf MK4 back in 2000, I seem to remember this is due to being within emission standards, thus a tuner chip might fix it?

Let me explain; if I stop for a red light uphill, I always have to rev up the engine to about 2000rpm and then let out the clutch, otherwise it stalls. It's a bit easier when starting on a water level road, but I still have to rev it a bit. In addition, the engine seems to have power for about a second, then it slips a bit until it seems to recover. Thus the drive doesn't feel as smooth as it could be.

Anyone experience anything similar? Should I just have gone for a DSG? (btw, this is a 2006 model).

    that doesnt sounds healthy mate!

have you had it checked out with VAG-COM scanning gear to look for error codes?

    doesnt sound normal at all

No haven't got VAG-COM set up yet.

The car runs fine otherwise, it seem to like me stepping on the pedal more than driving around carefully.

I think the issue is simply that the engine seems to slip a bit after a second, before it recovers. Can it be low puel pump pressure? It runs smooth after recovering though.

I was looking at VAG-COM cables on ebay. The generic ones from China seems to support only VAG-COM up to version 4.09. Also, they mention support for VW up to 2005. Does newer VWs require the more expensive cables directly from VAG-COM?

I would be looking at the clutch plate or springs on a clutch plate housing
Does it feel like it is slipping?

Definitely look at the engine management because that should not happen

My diesel is just fine, no such problems here at all.

            It doesn't slip.

It feels like I can't push the engine too much. If I start up slowly after a red light, it is smooth. If I push it harder, as you'd have to for a hill start, it's as if the engine chokes a bit after half to one second, before it recovers. As if it gets too much or too little of fuel or air and need to "get rid of it" before recovering.

So the engine is ok for any driving if I'm "nice" to it, except for hill starts, where I have to rev it up to 2000 rpms to avoid stalling after half a second.

Someone else with similar issue, explaining it a bit better; http://briskoda.net/forums/octavia-i...ll-away/34269/

With 2.0FSI, anyone come across this? When you pull away from rest in bottom gear, there is a sort of drag or slowdown just as you come off the clutch unless you put more than normal revs on. Doesn't seem to happen in other gears at all. Wondered if hand brake adjustment is too tight as there is hardly any upward movement in handbrake lever to put it on. I thought at first it was just me getting used to new feel of car/clutch but now I don't think so.
              Maybe I'm just not familiar enough with the clutch yet;

...the other small matter that has given us quite a shock! One of which is the short clutch and how firm it is to press in. It is exceptionally easy to stall… 3 times on the first day! And many times thereafter.
