Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Filters for DSG

    Hi all.

Both my VWs (2008 Golf TDI, 2011 Passat TDI) are due for DSG filter+fluid replace at next interval.

Looking to try and get some filters.

Both of these have the 6 speed DSG - will it be the same filter for each?

Stealership wants $50 each which seems excessive. Looks like I can get them posted from IDParts for about $45 each.

Can someone advise a good place to source them?

Was going to use the Penrite DSG fluid - seems most economical. Any thoughts/warnings?

Was going to use the top fill method - seems simplest and tidiest. Thoughts/warnings?

    Thank you.

Has been covered a fair bit on here, but most of it will be lost in bickering between those who've done it, and those who have not.

Try a different dealer. My local does them at $40 retail, and yes all 6-speeds take the same filter.

Pouring it in the top will take forever. Won't make any difference in the end, as you'll still need to check the level through the bottom inspection plug anyway.

Can't comment on the Penrite, I don't use it. My go-to is Liqui Moly 8100.

I was going to use top fill and measure out/measure in method for a few reasons - not the least of which is I don't have VCDS so would be guessing at temperature.

As I understand it the inner 8mm plastic fluid pipe is effectively what sets the level with an excess fluid draining into a sump held in by the 14mm sump plug.

Heating to 35 degrees presumably makes the fluid expand tending to push more fluid out of the gearbox and into the sump. Or have I misunderstood this and heating to 35 degrees actually makes it viscous enough to get into all the parts of the gearbox, and it really can't be topped of and finalised until that is done?

      Thanks Umai Naa.

Pull the 14mm plug and 8mm tube, dump the whole lot out.

Put both plugs back in, fill from the top as planned. Put all 5L in. Put new filter in, and re-fit the cap.

Start it up and let it idle for 10 minutes, then remove the 14mm plug to drain the excess, while it's runnning. Make sure the car is level.

Once it's down to a trickle, put the 14mm plug in, and call it a day. Job done.

AFAIK. Penrite DCT fluid is not approved fluid.

I've used the penrite fluid without any issues. I'm sure you could get an aftermarket filter from a euro parts place like bwa auto.

Can confirm that the Penrite is not approved.

Worse still, is that retailers only seem to stock it in 4L bottles. So you either buy way too much, or not enough.

That's a great suggested procedure - thank you Umai Naa!! Do you think I should cycle through the gears per the suggested factory process too?

Both our cars are well out of warranty so more concerned about whether the product is good and meets specs. Appreciate the product being VW approved would be one way for them to demonstrate that. It seems like the price difference is significant - the Penrite stuff is about $20/litre while most of the approved stuff is almost twice as much. Penrite in general don't make rubbish.

Thanks for the info and direct experience.

Yeah - I noticed that too. Penrite say they do 1 litre containers, so I might be able to order one of them in. Alternatively, with 2 cars it will only take me 4 changes to sync up (4 changes @ 5 litres = 5 x 4 litre containers).

Thank you for the info - If there's a thread you know of that you think I should read please let me know.

If you travel 15,000km per year, you'd make a saving of $25/year, by buying not approved oil from Penrite for your car. IMO, the saving is not worth it.

LM and Febi Bilstein can be had for around $27/L, and they're approved.

I think Eurobahn in Gosford can ship it out to you. He's probably got the filter as well.
