  • Decisions, decisions :)

After reading on here and elsewhere till I've got square eyes, I had decided that the right vehicle for me was the 5door GT Sport TDI with DSG, leather, and rear park sensors (for when she has to drive....)

So off to Barlo for an unannounced test drive, which was fine, except I couldn't get to go alone and had a young bloke sitting alongside.

The transmission hadn't learned my driving style, so it seemed quite slow in the changes and appeared to "fuzz" a lot to match the torque to speed, etc. I was a bit surprised by this, but when placed in sport mode it was much better. However, using the paddles still didn't supply a 4ms gear change.

Rolling acceleration on the freeway was stunning, and cruising along at 80 and booting it resulted in an easy 140k in no time..... The suspension felt a little confused at times, seeming to have a little "bounce" at the front, possibly caused by the relatively heavy diesel donk. The car only had 247ks on it.

So off home I went afterwards without the obligatory "salesman's appointment" (thank god - need to shop around , after all ). Decided then to go to Burwin taking her ladyship along this time, and there chatted with the lowest pressure sales guy I've ever encountered. He said I should drive the GTI, since it would remove all the slight doubts I had about the GT Sport.

Well, damn it, he was right. The GTI is in a different league. I now have to have one of those - grrrrr!

He quoted me $45,265 d/a, as long as I can get the Corporate Letter. Should be no problem, it's available to employees and subcontractors alike, so I just need to do a consulting job for a mate who is suitably positioned within a qualifying fleet company.

That's a nice price, for the 5 door GTI, leather, rear park sensors, DSG.
But, bugger it, the 1000k highway range won't be available to me in the GTI.

It is good to find out which car you really want BEFORE you sign on the dotted line. I always tell people to go for a decent test drive in all the serious candidates before they finally choose.

I don't mind if someone from the dealers is along for the ride, I shouldn't be doing anything that I couldn't do with them there anyway.

Hope you don't have to wait too long for your new toy
