  • Reverse camera install 2005 Mk5 2.0 FSI Golf Sportline

Hi all. I'm looking (hoping) to get a rear view camera installed under the VW boot badge/handle of my 2005 Mk5 Golf Sportline 2.0 FSI.

    Is this possible?

I've been looking online to find people that have done this but all the boot badge Mk5 camera installs I've found are for GTIs, so I'm beginning to think the badge RVC in my 2005 FSI isn't possible?

Online I have seen others install the camera alongside the licence plate of a Mk5, but I'm wanting to install it under the boot handle / VW emblem like the newer model Golfs have.

I'm aware my 2005 FSI has a different shaped rear badge to the newer Mk5 models (flatter vs curved face) - I'm not sure if that affects things?

    Thanks heaps for any advice.

I don't recall seeing a mod for a 2005 car (2007 onwards as my Mk5 was MY0. However, I ended up installing a licence plate one because the mod to make a Mk6 badge camera fit requires cutting a piece out of the tailgate to make it all fit and I wasn't prepared to do that to my car. It was much easier (and safer, IMO) to drill a small hole through the bumper.

I've recently just purchased the Number Plate Reverse Cam for my Golf MK5 too, can you detail how you fed the wire from outside the Number plate LED slot, into the rear of the car? I've tried googling but can't find much on it..

I've done the install of this on a non GTI. The panels are all identical.

Cutting the tailgate and wiper arm is a bit scary but I've had mine in for over three years and it's never missed a beat.

Bumper cams are OK but the viewing perspective is too low IMO. Plus the quality of the sensor and exposure control in the factory badge camera is second to none.

            2007 GT Sport.

There's no difference in the tailgates over the years.

            Sure

                Sure.

You need to remove the bumper (plenty of guides on that) and you'll need to jack the car up to get to the 2 or 3 bumper screws in the wheel arches.

I drilled a hole through the bumper on the nearside as I wanted the camera to pick up more of the kerb than the road.

Once in, I secured the cable against the bumper to stop it vibrating and used the little rubber airflow flaps at the rear of the wheel arch to get inside the car. You can tuck it in one corner and the flap still sits pretty much perfectly flat. I used a bit of duct tape to stop the cable no on around.

From there you can find a path up to the boot near the taillight cluster. I then used some yellowtongue to feed the cable over the wheel arch behind the trim and pop it out inside the trim cover between the rear seat and the car.

Popping the trim off, I tucked it under the door sill, used the yellowtongue to go past the B pillar and under the trim of the front passenger door. You can then run up the A pillar and in to the back of the dash, behind the glovebox.

I earthed the camera off at the dash too with the head unit.

I actually liked my Pioneer one (plus a 7.5" screen). It had really good resolution and with the Bold Sport LED licence plate lights was very usable at night too! In fact I preferred it to the RNS-510 in my Tiguan.

Having said that the one in my R is better again!

You can find details on fitting the Mk VI badge camera here: Installing a Golf Mark VI Rear View Camera (RVC) into a Golf Mark V | my-gti.com

It's quite a task as you also need to make changes to panelwork etc., plus it needs an RNS510 or other compatible head unit fitted.

Even on the Mk VI it wasn't all that simple (did several a few years ago) plus it's an expensive exercise.

If I were you, I'd go for the number plate unit.

Thanks all for responding - really helpful.
I deemed the install as too big for me and requiring a pro (cutting into panels is not something I'm confident with). I thought all was good in that I found a guy that was going to do the install, but then I realised Apple CarPlay isn't available on the RNS510 or other compatible unit that the camera is tied to.
So it looks like it's going to be a number plate camera install for me, as I definitely want Apple CarPlay.
On that note, does anyone have any particular number plate camera models they can recommend for a 2005 Golf?
I'll start a separate thread about CarPlay unit recommendations.
                      Thanks again.

I bought one on ebay- has wireless, so no need to have wires running to the headunit.
Can't remember exact price but was under $40 with shipping I think.

I'm using a Pumpkin brand 7in running windows CE and added similar unit to this one below.

I don't see why it wouldn't work with other units.

I'd choose a head unit that does what you want and make sure it comes with a matching camera. I bought a Pioneer AVH unit as it did App Radio and had a Pioneer RVC to match. That way you can guarantee compatibility and quality.
