Just a query on this.....
from a standstill it behaves like an auto. is this the clutches slipping until you have enough speed up for them to engage fully?

There is some limited slipping of the clutch as you take off, yes. But it's only one clutch doing it (as the clutches work on alternate gears - the first clutch works on gears 1,3 and 5, the second clutch on gears 2,4 and 6).
