Tire Issue

I've got a MY08 GTI and was putting air into the tires this morning when I noticed a lump on the side of my tire. I've got continentals, and went to the nearest tire joint. They said it was a problem and could blow at any time. Then gave me a price for a replacement continental which was $580 (not really in my budget at the moment).

Has anybody got any suggestions? or advice? It sounds as if I have to get this sorted out straight away.

Also on another note what tire pressure do you guys use for the standard 17" tires? It says 45 on the cap but that seems fairly high?

Mate, unless you're American, it's spelt "tyre". You say you have an '08... well, I would suggest you check to see if that tyre can be replaced under warranty. VW aren't responsible for tyre warranty, you need to take it to a tyre place that's authorised by Continental. If it's a manufacturing fault, then it should be covered. Otherwise, if you've hit a pothole or some sort of large object, then it won't be covered. Don't delay in getting it done, sidewall eggs can be quite dangerous.

Dunno where you got the 45 from, the pressures are indicated in kPa or Bar on the filler flap, ranging from 240-300 kPa.

ah good old sidewall damage aye. unless the bubble is on both sides of the tyres indicating manufacturing defect then you're gonna have to fork out the dosh im afraid. 580 is too steep though definitely shop around. and then go and get beaurepairs tyre warranty its only 7$ a corner and it warrants against any damage.

I had Kumho's on my bommadore, had this happen twice only on one side of the tyre, I had it fixed both times under warranty before i changed to dunlops. I'd say you have good chance of warranty if the tyre is fairly new and no signs of physical damage.

$580 for a conti !!!!!

It would be almost as cheap to get two new tyres on one end of the car, leave the other two conti's on the other end.

Sidewall damage is dangerous and should be replaced ASAP. It cannot be repaired.

If the car is newish I'd be pushing this through VW, they fitted the tyre, they have the responsibility to cover the warranty.

VW might've fitted the tyre, but they don't warrant it. It has to go back to the tyre manufacturer (i.e. tyre shop). Same goes for all vehicle manufacturers.

Thanks for the advice. I replaced the tyre yesterday with a Continental. I got it for $400 which was a better price. Once they wear down i'll get something cheaper, but for the time being I wanted to replace it with the same tyre.

pinzvidz apologies for the tyre spelling. I guess I got used to seeing it spelt that way from visiting a F1 web site.

As for the tyre pressure, I believe i'm talking in PSI which is what the tyre pump uses at my fuel station. Volkswagen told me yesterday between 36 - 40 but they are only a new dealer and didn't seem totally sure.

Actually the very next day after I picked up the car I noticed tyre blister on the outside wall on my front right. Took it straight back to dealer and it got replaced that day.
They looked to see if a hit something or not trying to find an excuse, but because that there wasn't any I got replaced with new one.
I am not talking about Continentals
