just wondering if any guys have put a pod style filter on their mk5 GTI instead of a carbon fibre airbox. just wanna know if there are any advantages going a pod instead of airbox

If you're talking about an uncovered "cone" shaped pod filter - very little advantage. What better airflow you may get (it's not guaranteed!) by removing the box will be negated by the increased induction air temperature. You'd be better leaving the box in place, albeit with some modifications to improve flow through it (the Polo GTI guys for instance run a Seat air intake to the standard airbox because it's less restrictive than the standard item).
If you're talking about a pod with a CAI (something like what mikinoz has), you may get better performance - more if you do a retune at the same time!Nothing to see here...Comment

Spot on. An exposed pod will sound great, but sucking hot air will actually decrease performance during most driving conditions. You really need a housing, and Mik and I have actually made our cars unroadworthy as any airbox has to be sealed in most States, strictly speaking. How exactly do they define sealed? A completely sealed airbox would be rather pointless!

Ive got the neuspeed CAI with the Neuspeed cover.
Check out Youtube for videos and sound.
The stock filter was restrictive and the CAI opens up that restriction opening up the throttle allowing it to rev out a little bit more. You will also lose about 50km or so on your petrol.
One complaint is that it gargles. You hear a noise like metal grinding type which is air being sucked in by the CAI at slow speeds. So it goes like, kusssss grindy type noise chusssshhhhh then release of the air.
At high speeds its, Vrooooooooom (let go of gas pedal/throttle) tkkshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (back on) vrooooooooom.
I found all this out once i had it installed after much research - couldnt find anything on youtube and all inside cabin noises are lower on video than if you are in the cabin. So you WILL hear it all inside the cabin.

From what I understand, a pod, such as above can be defected, whereas any housing that only has an enclosed duct from the front of the car is legal. I can't see it being a huge issue, but have noticed all the Japper Fast and furious mags mention this all the time. In Victoria, Police require 3 defective items for the car to receive a "canary" being unworthiness sticker.
A car cannot be called "defective" merely on 1 item.
Hence the Air intake is still roadworthy.Comment
