  • "tick tick tick" sound at idle?

Thought I would start a new thread for this.

Does anyones GTI have a kid of 'ticking' sound that only appears on idle?

I've only had my GTI for 8 hours so very new to this.

I searched the VW Vortex forum and found this:

"It's the FSI direct injectors ticking away... tick tick tick!!!!
It's normal and yeppers, very loud. It's a consequence of precisely metered and directly injected fuel squirting into the combustion chambers at low idle (850 rpm). When you rev the engine the intervals get shorter, so like harmonics, the tone smooths out and the injector ticking sounds smoother but then gets drowned out by the over all engine noise itself, so the sounds seem to go away"

Any thoughts on this? I was going to go to the dealer about it...

Don't stress too much about it mate. I was concerned with the way my car starts - I thought it sounded like something was gonna fall off!!! Sitting around with a couple of other guys and listening to their startups made me quite happy that mine was quite normal.
The FSI engine, in my reckoning, has lots of strange noises to it. But as long as you let it warm up, if new don't rev it too hard, ie redline, in the first 1500kms, and treat it with a bit of respect, once 1500 is up, let 'er rip!
PS you did the right thing by checking the forums - do this BEFORE going back to your dealer, as sometimes their knowledge is quite poor compared to what people on here have experienced.
    Good luck!!!

        perfectly normal yes.
It wasnt that so much that concerned me when i got the car but the start up that sounded like the engine had a few loose bolts in it that worried me more! But as above it seems to be just the nature of this engine

This noise is perfectly normal. Just wait til you get carried away with mods and need to remove the engine cover which masks most of the noise.. The ticking almost becomes embarrassing when sitting there at the lights.

My GTI makes the same noise but the ticks are a little quicker than the way I read yours

People sometimes ask me if it is a diesel....I get very offended then realise they know nothing about cars!!

Don't most if not all cars with hydraulic lifters do this at idle when cold?

Mine does it all day long..... hot or cold.

I'd say it's the valves/tappets for sure, it's certainly got that sound.....

I guess if it stops happening, then you need to get worried....
