Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Got GTI today (sneeky dealer?) And idle?

Picked up my GTI today from a dealer in Canberra. 15,000km on the clock, 11 months old - $34,900 second hand (white, manual 5 door)

We had agreed on the price INCLUDING the 15,000 service. But when I got off the plane, went to the dealership, they said they didn't need to do it because... "the 15,000km service had been done early at 10,000km and VW have stamped it next service due at 22,500" (or something)

"No use wasting good oil" the salesman tells me.

"But we agreed on the price INCLUDING the 15,000km service" I say.

"Oh we did the service, just not the oil or filter so we don't need to stamp the book" - by now I'm looking baffled but wanted to get out of there so got the keys and left.

Had a nice 3 hour drive back from Canberra and really enjoyed the trip. Everything appears to be perfect, but one thing I did notice was that idle is a little bit, um, inconsistant? It purrs along idling at the lights, and every now and then you feel the slightest and little bumps - almost like someone has just touched the back of the car with their hand breifly. Does this make sense?

A friend said that it could be the 'Closed Loop Idle' - a phenonmon that newer cars exhibit. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about and if this is normal?

Overall beautiful car and loving it!

i get the odd stumble at idle. Was worse when the car was newer. Seemed to be a bit less after my oil change. That might just be a placebo effect though

            Congrats on the new weapon!

Dude, the filter costs $18, and 5L oil about $70 from any VW service dept. For less than $100 you can do it yourself, know it's been done, and save yourself the agro.

I find my TDI, whilst a diesel, has "stumble points" at certain revs, and at a recent dyno day noticed my standard air fuel ratio plot was rather messy, whereas a mates chipped car was super smooth. I'd say it's a normal part of the stock MAP, and know if you ever chip it the ratio's will be a lot better.

You can always run some injector cleaner through it, as whilst it's unlikely you'd have any deposits or buildup in a car so new, but at least for less than $20 you've ruled that out.

Bad batch of CHEAP fuel from the dealer could also be likely, low octane, cheap as possible and from a big old drum stored outside......run your current tank right down and fill her with some good stuff!

Lastly, enjoy your first decent drag

Hi guys in relation to what blue-reality was saying about when idling. Yes when my GTi (petrol) is idling I also get a slight bumping feeling in the engine. It has been fully serviced only using Mobil 1 and V-Power or Ultimate fuel but it still persists. Took it back to the dealer and as usual could not fault it. Took the service manager out in the car and sure enough he felt it, took it back to the workshop for 4 days and they gave up could not fix. Had no idea why ????

It is a very very minor thing so do not worry about it anymore.

Car still goes like the clappers

Mine has the odd "miss" at idle too - mostly during warm-up. No codes logged, so I assume it's nothing to worry about.

Still be interesting to hear if someone with a chipped GTI felt that it disappeared. At the dyno day you could quickly tell the stock vs chipped by the fuel ratio plot let alone the power output.

So as to not hijack this thread, post 50 and 51.

I find this bit comical, since according to the manual all that is required for the 15000km service is an oil change and filter, and inspection of brake pad wear.

Maybe they did check fluid levels etc., you will never know, but the oil change certainly is the main part of the 15000km service.

Yes, I would describe the idle a bit rough sometimes, having previously owned jap cars, and yes it does seem a bit smoother once "chipped".
