  • Tow Bar for Jetta

    Hi Everyone,

This is my first post, but definitely not the last. The Jetta is my 2nd VW, after owning a MkV Golf FSI for a few years.

I'm interested to hear if anything has recommendations on where to get a tow bar. I want to use it for a bicycle holder. Preferably the tow bar can be taken off when not in use as my garage is fairly small and its currently a tight fit as is!

    Thanks.

I asked when I ordered my Jetta and the dealer quoted $1600 for the OEM. The OEM is nice as it is detachable and just has a plastic cover in the lower bumper. (I didn't get it as I couldn't afford it).

Apparently the $$$ come from a module required that provides the lighting output, trailer brakes (if fitted) and coding for the ABS and headlight levellers (to adjust for a trailer) and parking sensors.

I assume a towbar without the module would be much cheaper.

Hayman Reese lists it as 'under development'.

There are a few available in the UK and US from third parties (search in tdiclub.com for examples) but I'm not sure if they'd ship to AU.

Detachability is actually a legal requirement (you're not meant to have the tongue sticking out if you're not actually towing something). Not that this stops people from just leaving them plugged in forever...
      Nothing to see here...

        I didn't know that. Thanks!

I would go for detachable as I don't like kneecapping myself every time I open the boot.

The mods are also required if you have reverse parking sensors on the car so the tow bar doesn't set them off. Just had one put on my Multivan. Was about $1,500.

            have a read of this:http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...48694&posted=1

otherwise do a search on yellowpages for tow bar fitters and see what they quote you. just go aftermarket, it'll be cheaper.

If you updated your location details ... people could actually recommend places close to you for fitting said towbars. It would also be handy for other members to invite you on GTGs ... just a thought.

For those of you new to the forum ... welcome.

Thanks everyone. I rang a few places in Sydney and no one seems to have anything aftermarket although Fastech in Petersham were willing to make something up after I told them how much the factory tow bar is. I might stick to the cheapo type bike rack that attaches to the boot until Hayman Reese have something ready.
