  • Where to get one wheel?

    Hi all,

Quick question.. Just picked up my ex-demo 08 gti and noticed that one wheel has gutter rash on it. I wont tell the mrs (its her car) about it but id like to get a new / 2nd hand mint wheel to replace it.

Ive posted in the wanted section of the board, but can anyone suggest the best place to get a mint wheel without bending over on price from a dealer?

    Cheers and thanks,
    Aaron

if it's just gutter rash mate, you'll find you're probably able to just get it repaired! should cost you substantially less too, i'd like to think.

    where abouts are you located?

Melbourne... Noble park to be exact (I work for the RACV)... I had my M5 shaddow chrome wheels refinished recently by Advanced Alloy Wheels and they charge me $1200 for the set which is trade price so I figured $300 a wheel to get refinished, if a brand new one was say $400 then id just go the new as you'd have to get 2 done wouldn't you? (to match the colour) unless you used the spare and got the one fixed and used that as the backup

Man thats expensive, I had all four of my wheels done on my old VY commodore SS before i sold it for $350.00, top notch job couldnt even tell, he was a mobile bloke. Im in brisbane though otherwise id give you the guys contact details.
How bad is it? All the way around the rim or just spots?

may have been expensive with the M5 wheels cause of the finish, where as a painted finish wouldn't (perhaps) cost as much. but I think that was the place i was thinkin of, may not have been. have a squiz in the recommended parts/suppliers section, and there is a shop in melbie, where someone is getting thier BBS's re done.

the option is of course, switch with the spare, and whack the repaired one in the boot. up to you, plenty of options I think before having to look for new wheels.

driving with a spacesaver is not cool though.

And I really think his Mrs will notice the black space saver, if not by looks by handling!

i have gone through this whole exercise before when i buckled a rim on a country drive. a new GTI rim will set you back ~$680. i called around the parts departments at the 2 dealers in WA and they had a brand new condition second hand rim for $450. the original owner bought GTI but fitted aftermarket rims and sold the OEM ones back to the dealer.
