Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Auto mirror dip not returning fully

Anybody else have the problem where the auto dip side mirror only returns about 95% after reversing, so it slowly starts to point at the road over time?

It's giving me the s***s having to readjust it all the time. I'll be taking it up as a warranty issue, once I flush any other issues out. Just wondering if its a common problem.

I’m sure others will correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t believe the mirror dip has a true memory function as such.
I imagine all that happens is that the vertical mirror motor gets power applied for a set period of time when reverse is selected to point the mirror at the ground.
When a forward gear is selected, the same mirror motor gets a reverse polarity voltage applied to it for exactly the same period of time. The net result being that in theory, the mirror should return to its original position. The problem with this method is that if the mirror motor is slightly more efficient in one direction (up or down), it won’t return exactly to its original position. The difference in position may not be noticeable after a few ‘dippings’ but the error is cumulative and may eventually end up with the mirror either higher or lower than originally set.

only if you paid for genuine reversing sensors...

BTW, has anyone worked out if there is a VAG-COM code to turn this function ON, as everything would appear to be there (vertical motor, detection of reverse gear)??
I expect that there is just a "bit" to set to achieve this...

I dont think my mirrors always go back to where they started.
            Maybe 80% of the time.

I am with you on this too.
I have noted that 50-70% of time, the mirror returns to original position.
I cant seem to find what particuarly things I do that create this circumstance.
One guess: maybe if you are switching between reverse and drive quickly, or in quick succession ( ie 3 point turns , then it may not reverse back to normal position.
                my 2 cents

I think it returns to it's (supposedly) original position when the speed gets above 15km/h.

Yep, MY07 Jetta TDI, same thing. I don't worry about it and just nudge the mirror back up. I'd rather have the feature as it is (i.e. 95%) than not have it at all.

Ditto. Dealership never indicated that one was dependant on the other.

Is this something that could be done via VAGCOM if sensors were fitted after delivery?

I think I have nutted out why it doesn't go back up sometimes.

If you stop (i.e. put it into park) when you reverse, it doesn't like it.

For example - when I am driving solo, I reverse out of my garage, down the driveway, onto the road and go. Works fine - mirror tilts back up as it should.

If the family is going out, I usually back the car out of the garage and park on the driveway out the front of the house (put car in P, leave engine on). Load wife+kid+stuff into car, get back in, select reverse, onto the road and go. Have noticed in this instance mirror won't come back up automatically once D is selected.

I have noticed that if you select another gear (D or P) while the mirror is still moving down then it gets confused and stops where it is.

But otherwise, mine 100% of times does not return fully to where it was.
