Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Golf Gti Suspension?

    Hi all,

Picked up a new gold Gti for the missus, am putting some 19's on it shortly.

Because the sidewall will be 22.5mm shorter, are springs available which will give me back some ride quality as well as maybe a small drop in height?

The stock suspension i feel is way to firm to still have a ride height like it does.

    Thanks.

what size tyre are you putting on for 22mm less sidewall!!??

if you put 225/35/19 which is the right size that should only be 3mm less on the sidewall.

as for a drop in ride height as well as more spongy suspension... not sure you'll have much luck there. most people want lower and firmer lol.

He is talking about sidewall height, not rolling diameter.
The sidewall will be 22.5mm shorter on the 19s, which makes the sidewall much stiffer (roughly 22% stiffer) and therefore the ride harsher.

hrb93 I don't think you will be able to fit springs which improve the ride without major compromise.

Improving the ride either requires softer springs or less initial damping from the shock. Less initial damping in the shock will reduce your handling, and softer springs will bottom out or scrub more easily.

It gets even worse if you want to lower it, as you will bottom out even sooner.
Most lowering springs will be stiffer than standard, which is not what you want.

I have standard suspension and manage to scrape the spoiler regularly when pressing on over rough back roads - hence why I haven't lowered mine. If I lowered it I would have to stiffen it dramatically, and I don't want to make the ride any stiffer than it is now.

Red may be the devils colour, but this car is pure heaven

If you are worried about ride quality, I definately wouldnt go 19s!
18s are my reccomendation. At the moment I am back on my 17s until I can replace my 18in tyhres and the ride is smoother. Ask my partner!!

With the 19's and stock height suspension it will lessen the "GAP" between the top of the tyre and the guard by 28.3mm so the ride height will be OK.

Are any springs available that do not necessarily lower the car but are more compliant then the stock ones?

are the stock springs Progressive or linear?

          Thanks.

the suspension from the gt is slightly softer than the gti and has the same ride height. too much hassle for not much gain though imo.
