  • LED Tails and Projector Headlights

Well I finally got around to fitting the headlights, and although it was a bit of a pain having to dismantle the front end of the car, it was fairly straightforward with the aid of the relevant pages from the VW tech manual (thanks Mischa).

I'm reasonably happy with the look of the headlights, but to be honest, I expected them to look better, as the one's I had on my XR5 looked sensational. I think they would look better with only two lamps (instead of 3) and an indicator strip along the bottom (like factory lights). They look great at night though!

It's the same story with the tails. They look brilliant from some angles, and not so great from others, but again, they look fantastic when illuminated at night. I'll post some night shots later this evening.

Anyway, they wont be everyone's cup of tea, but I like my cars to look a bit different from the factory version, and I think the black goes well with the grey. I just need some Black 18's with a polished lip to finish it off.

You're right about the fronts - it maybe looks a little like a Mazda 6. But IMO they don't look ugly, unlike a lot of after market units. I'm just not used to seeing this design. I agree that the indicator strip would have looked better at the bottom, but maybe once again it's just I'm not used to seeing them above the lights?

As for the rears, I don't mind them at all and was looking at the red version for mine (my GT is Tornado Red). One suggestion: hunt down some of those silver indicator globes - the orange ones don't help the look too much.

Overall a nice mod. My 2c.

The indicators are actually the smallest of the 3 lamps, and that strip along the top is just for show. I actually went down this morning and bought some silver indicator globes for headlights, but didn't think to buy any for the tails. But you're right, they will definitely look better without the orange tinge, and I'll get some soon.

The headlights would have looked better with 2 globes, like the xenons. BMW inspired I would guess. The tails, very Mazda. Not a fan. But at least they're different so I have to give you kudos on that.

          Wicked!

It's different, so I like it. You've the same car as me so it's great to see the offset against the grey.

My biggest question is are they any brighter at night? I am after more power for night time mountain driving, as the stock high beam isn't quite enough in the twisties. For me anyway.

The Skoda has projector halogen lamps. At first I thought they were crap compared to the lights of the golf, because there is nothing shining down on the road right in front of you. Having now driven in the country I think they are far superior, the light projects a lot further - it's almost like they have the distance of high beam, just without the height - the cutoff is very sharp. I would highly recommend them for country driving.

Looks like a spider - Not a big fan to be honest :\ But i've seen much worse! :p

Can tell the lights are cheap ebay specials, they really look it i'm afraid.

IMO the only way to do aftermarket lights is to spend big bucks on hella/oem+ gear. :\

A spider eh? Well it's missing a couple of eyes, but I was after that angry predator look (for when I'm hunting my favourite prey - young punks in XR6's and SV6's ) so I guess I achieved that at least.

Actually, when you put them side by side with the OEM lights, there doesn't seem to be much difference in terms of materials quality and finish imo. I had a look for Hella lights, but couldn't find anything to get excited about, and I was trying to get away from the oem look.

Greg, the low beams need adjusting (one is too high and the other too low) so it's hard to say exactly how good the performance is. However, on high beam, it certainly seems to be a decent improvement over the oem lights, especially on unlit country roads.

I'm only running the cheap Halogens that came with the lights, so I reckon there would be a significant improvement if I ran some high quality H1 bulbs.

My camera doesn't like taking night shots, so the quality isn't the best, but here's a pic anyway.

Not Diggin it, did you check out the oem LED rear lights?

Like you said too many lamps, two is plenty for the size of the headlight. "Two's a company, Three's a crowd"

Also i've heard that those type of front headlights are prone to fogging up, so you may wanna keep that in mind.

IMO not likin da fron'ts or the rears but its your car, and you do what you want with it, just as long as ur diggin it, its all good.

Yep I saw those at TM Tuning, and they would have been my first choice, but the description said LHD only. I'm quite happy with the black tail lights anyway, it's just the triple lamp issue in the headlights that I'm not too keen on. I'm not sure why it doesn't suit the Golf, because I reckon Alfa's have some of the best looking front end's in the car world, and they have triple lamps. And Mazda 6's have 4 lamps I think, and those headlights look great imo.

I did actually notice a bit of condensation in the bottom corner of both headlights yesterday....Hmmmm might be time to contact the seller and talk refunds me thinks....

Yeah I'll have to cop that one on the chin! Although I do stand by that comment to some degree, because to look at, they appear reasonably well put together. However, if there's condensation build up, then they are obviously not well put together at all!
