Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Consideration in getting GT TDI with DSG

Firstly let me apologise if this is in the wrong location.

I thinking of getting a GT TDI with DSG. My current ride is a 2004 Mazda6 with 230,000 KM's on the clock. I've had it from new and get about 8.8 L /100 km's on Shell Vpower. I do lot's of Freeway driving. Sydney / Newcastle return five days a week.

    To get to the point.
What sort of economy are you getting?
What is the average cost of servicing?
Do the injectors get replaced at a certain interval?

As you can see from the amount of K's I do that I need to ensure I make the right decision with you help.

    Many thanks.

wow thats a lot of KM's!!

    welcome to the forum.

on the freeway at around 110 you'll be getting about 5.8. obviously if you drive faster you'll use slightly more and vise versa.

first service at 15000kms is around 350, maybe someone else can chime in on the cost of the other ones. however you wont have to replace brake fluid as often if you're just cruising on the freeway.

have you considered getting it in manual? cheaper to buy and uses slightly less fuel and if you're spending your whole time on the freeway in 6th then it shouldnt make a difference most of the time. just a thought.

the golfs are extremely comfortable and stable at high speeds so you're definitely thinking about the right car.

Overall, flogging my TDI, I average 6.5.
Highway as Misch points out is into the 5's overall.
I have a manual, but around the city you'll be busy with the gears. Depends on how active you want to be. The gears only have a short range each compared to your mazda, thanks to the narrow rev power band of the diesel.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I need to get the DSG as my wife won't learn to drive a manual, can't say I can really blame her.

I should also have asked did anyone go for the leather option or bi-xenon lights both look pretty good but add about 5K to the price.
